Play mtg after a long time
by doxaios » 17 Sep 2008, 15:00
I am going to buy mtg cards after a long time and I am wondering which decks or boosters to buy. I mean go for the latest expansions or buy a theme deck from 10th edition and buy boosters from other expansion to make a deck. Suggestions please?

I like theme decks. If you have money, get at least two of the same one, then you can combine them into one decent deck.

You may want to just wait two weeks and just get into it using the new set, Shards of Alara. Get some of the new Intro Packs (replaces Theme Decks) and/or a Fat Pack. They've changed the Intro Pack contents slightly to what they used to be but they're still supposed to be pre-constructed for quick play. As Huggs suggested, buy 2 of a colour theme you like and make a good 60 card deck out of them since each each come comes with one booster in it. Go buy a Fat Pack which is worth it since they now come with 8 boosters instead of six. They also come with a spindown counter, a box to hold the cards in (woo) and a guide to the new set.
Then, go back and try to get individual 10th Edition cards you need by swapping, buying them online or from reseller shops or just take your chances and crack open some 10th Edition boosters. You could have a think about buying a few 10th Edition Theme Packs but you can save yourself the trouble by checking out their contents online beforehand to see if you even need them.

The price of the fat packs are the same. Shards of Alara will be released on October 3. And if you want to build a black-red deck, I'd say start with Shadowmoor. Great black-red hybrid cards in there. Just my opinion, though.doxaios wrote:The price will be the same as the old fatpacks with the 6 boosters? When shards of alara will be released?I dont mean pre release.Between Morningtide,Shadowmoor,Eventide which expansion is the best for a black-red or black-green deck?

The best set for black-red would either be DISSENSION with the Cult of Rakdos guild and Hellbent mechanic or SHADOWMOOR with it's red-black hybrids and color matters theme. For black-green, you would be looking at RAVNICA: CITY OF GUILDS, with the Golgari guild and Dredge mechanic or EVENTIDE with it's black-green and some more color matters. Finally, I love the flavor of black-white so I'll add it as a bonus. That combo can be found in GUILDPACT and EVENTIDE.
Theme deck suggestions: Either the black red deck from shadowmoor or the black green or black white from eventide.
Shards of Alara will be release on Friday, October 2nd!

What about a green-red? I think that is a good idea someone make a list withe the colours and the expansions that are the best for this decks. For example
Black-Red : 1)Shadowmoor 2)Dissension 3)....4)...
Blue-White :...... etc etc
And when someone else recalls another expansion post his reply and then added to the main list.

The only Gold Cards in Kamigawa are Genju of the realm and Iname as one, so there are no obvious color combinationsdoxaios wrote:Something about kamigawa block?
