Cats n' Rats BG

This was the 3rd deck I made. Just having fun with silly themes, and it worked pretty good. Would work better with Plague and Pestilence Rats, but until they show up... it'll do. It's held up pretty well against a variety of other decks I've tried it again, and just kinda fun to play.

AFAIK it's made to standard Vintage Tourny Rules.

4 Bayou
6 Forest
4 Overgrown Tomb
6 Swamp
2 Volrath's Stronghold

1 Black Lotus
3 Creeping Mold
3 Damnation
3 Gaea's Anthem
2 Howling Mine
3 Maelstrom Pulse
3 Mist Leopard
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
3 Muck Rats
2 Needle Storm
1 Nevinyrral's Disk
3 Panther Warriors
3 Penumbra Bobcat
3 Ratcatcher
3 Razortooth Rats
4 Relentless Rats
1 Sol Ring
3 Soul Feast
2 Wandering Stream

Some rats from the Kamigawa block wouldn't also be too bad. Later on, I'd scrap the cats and let the rats rule once they arrive

The deck is nice, but like apthaven said, I would drop the cats and go all rats. Like this:

60 Total Cards

32 Creatures
-------------
4x Marrow-Gnawer
4x Ratcatcher
20x Relentless Rats
4x Royal Assassin

8 Spells
----------
4x Mox Jet
4x Raise Dead

20 Land
--------
20x Swamp

Very simple deck that doesn't much care what your opponent throws onto the table because... well, rrrratsss!
Airborn opponents are no fun, but that is why you have your Royal (pain in the) Assassin.
The key to victory: be relentless. #-o

Yes, you do not put 4 relentless rats in a deck, you put around 40 :).

40 Relentless Rats? That is overdoing it.
Besides, you do need a few other cards to make the deck work.
That reminds me, where is Thrumming Stone when you need it?

Then I would change the deck a bit, add 4 Dark Ritual, 4 Thrumming Stone, get rid of the Ratcatcher and Marrow-Gnawer. Drop the moxes as well and replace them with 4 Loxodon Warhammer and you have the rats deck I play in RL.
Maybe, just maybe, I could swap out a warhammer, an assassin and a swamp for 3 Sol Ring. And then:
Turn 1: Swamp, Sol Ring.
Turn 2: Swamp, Dark Ritual, Thrumming Stone.
Turn 3: Relentless Rat, thrumming the rest...
Turn 4: You're dead, Fred.
"My name isn't Fred".
Doesn't matter, Fred. You're dead anyway.
Wanna play another round? :D

Yes, you Wouldn't need 40 rats with thrumming stone... though that would be fun to try :P(i.e. get other good cards and make ~100 card deck).

Worst case scenario: Wrath of God after you put all your rats in play. YIKES!

100 card deck, possible but unplayable I think.
Better to keep as close to 60 as you can.
Although, often during deckbuilding, I am at 80 cards after my initial selection of "needed" cards.
Then the process of elimination begins.
Then testing, suddenly thinking of THAT card, adding it in, removing a few others, more testing and by the time I am happy with it, the deck does not look anything like I originally intended.
But hey, as long as it wins, I won't complain.

Naah, you might have reanimation tricks handy (e.g. Bloodbond March, quite useful anyways if you have self-milling), worst possible would be Moratorium Stone or Scalpelexis.

The Moratorium would be nasty indeed, the Scalpelexis less so since our good buddy, the Royal Assassin can knock him out of the sky before he deals damage.

Another nasty would be Echoing Truth, though not so much if you can fetch all the rats from your grave somehow. The main problem would be the opponent still having all his creats.

EDIT: Echoing Truth + Extripate next turn = death of a Planeswalker :).

True. But I'm sticking old school with the decks. No more than 4 of any card except basic lands. That's why Plague Rats and Pestilence Rats would be better.

And besides, the cats and rats was a basic theme that sounded fun. I want to do a Cat and Hound deck too, but the mix sucks currently.

Huh? Relentless Rats can be safely used in any number. It says right there on the card :)
