ODBC: Nov/Dec Challenge - More Than One Way

Postby Resonantg » 03 Nov 2010, 15:23

Welcome back once again to another edition of THUNDERDOME... err umm, I mean the Forge Official Deck Building Challenge! I'm trying to get this into a standardized format for ease of rules. So here we go.

This challenge topic is: "More Than One Way". The goal of this challenge is to win by any means OTHER than lifepoint depletion. Poison Counters, Deck Milling or Special Victory cards/conditions must be the primary focus and means of victory. Although lifepoint victories is allowable, it must not be the focus of the deck. Judging should be based on how well this theme is met.

Poison and Deck Milling I think is fairly easy to understand. Special Victory Cards we currently as of version 1031 are:

Battle of Wits
Felidar Sovereign
Helix Pinnacle
Epic Struggle
Door to Nothingness
Barren Glory
Near-Death Experience
Mortal Combat
Test of Endurance

If future November versions allow other victory card conditions, they will all be allowed.

NOTE -- Cards that kill by lifepoint depletion, regardless of it's method is not an alternative method (Black Vice, Mana Barbs, Incindiary Command, Zuran Spellcaster). They are still lifepoint depletion. They aren't banned, but just be aware of that.

Completed decks ready to go, upload here in zip/rar/dck format.

Other than that, here's the new (hopefully standardized) rules.

Deck Size: 60+ cards
Format/Restricted/Banned Format: VINTAGE format (as set by WOTC)
Forge Edition: November versions or earlier.
Required Cards: None
Specifically Restricted Cards: None
Card Colors: All

Contest Close Date: Dec 17th, 2010 Midnight Central Standard Time.
Voting Close Date: 1-1-11 Midnight CST(yes, you get 1 extra day in case of partying hard).

If I missed anything, PM me or post questions here. Good luck! Tell your friends! I think this one will make you look at deck building differently and give LOTS of good ideas.

Rules updated on 11-8-10

Also, Battle of Wits. I might just make a deck for this one...

I love the theme!

@Resonantg: This is just an opinion. I already like the current rules for Nov/Dec ODBC, but I think it would be beneficial if we included cards from any forthcoming November releases. That way, we wouldn't have to backtrack too far back when checking for what cards are legal for the Nov/Dec ODBC (we only have to check if they're not using cards from December releases as opposed to checking if they're not using cards from both November and December releases). Anyway, that's just my opinion. Also, I would like to help you, in my free time, check for the legality of the submitted decks.

Also, there's some really quirky bugs in this release that hinder the deck working properly. For instance, any of the tutor cards will shuffle your chosen card into the deck instead of putting it on top.

Okay,

I'll open the floor to any November releases since there are bug issues. That said, the reason I made it the first release BEFORE or just following the start of the contest was to make sure we didn't have last minute decks show up with a version not everyone had and couldn't judge fairly.

But maybe this is fine if we set it to the first month of the contest editions. What do the rest of you think about including in the limitation of editions to include any November editions?

My opinion would say sure, but not December versions because then the problem would crop up.

Tawlk among yerselves.

November but not December seems reasonable.

This is the current alternate wins that exist right now.

Thanks friarsol, I was just going to add another but you beat me to it. :)

Good job.

Okay, then UNLESS there are any objections, November versions will be allowed up till 11-30-10 (if one shows up on that day).

Another minor but critical rules error. I remembered the wrong rules format. This is a VINTAGE format contest, not Legacy.

There we go... hope this helps everyone out.

Here we go... My entry is called MultipleWaysToWin. It's a big sucker. The whole point is to stay alive until one of the win conditions comes into play. There's a crapload of lifegain, enough creatures to keep things interesting, things to stop creatures from attacking me, ways to keep the creatures from even hitting the battlefield... You get the general idea.

Dear God! It's the kitchen sink method! Well that definitely follows the spirit of the contest. What a way to kick it off. LOL

It seems to be doing all right so far in playtesting. Time will tell. Every card in there more or less has a place in the deck. And it does need to be big for the Battle of Wits to go off.
