Defense of the Steel

Postby jpb » 25 Sep 2008, 03:05

A simple deck with some drawbacks. This deck does take advantage of the fact that the computer tries to lay a creature out regardless of what is in play. Even if the opponent refused to lay a third creature then you can play Hunted Troll and force them to have > 3.

Deck list is as follows.
4x Angelic Wall
4x Darksteel Colossus
4x Defense of the Heart
12x Forest
4x Hunted Troll
4x Ornithopter
2x Phyrexian Walker
14x Plains
4x Serra Avenger
4x Vine Trellis
4x Wrath of God

Play this deck by putting out the 0 costing artifact creatures as early blockers. On turn two put out one of the walls. Wait until you can play Defense of the heart and when you can sacrifice it go get two copies of Darksteel Colossus into play. One addition that might be good would be two or so Armageddons, to help reduce the risk that the opponent will steal or enchant any of your Darksteel Colossus after they are in play.

I'll post the deck file as soon as Defense of the Heart gets put into a version of MTG Forge.

Id say 4x armageddon is mandatory for this deck.

Ooh! That looks like it might work. Nasty! 8)

Here is to hoping for a new beta version with all the cards offered on this board recently. [-o<

I added the deck. It could really use 4x Enlightened Tutor to help get the Defense of the Steel out faster. I have also played with adding 4x Eladamri's Call to help get the right creatures usually a quick blocker or the Hunted Troll if Defense of the Steel is out.

I made a varient of this myself using lots of big critters and only one colossus. My deck strayed quite a bit from your list and left out the armageddons. Fun deck for sure:

==edit== eladamri's call is better than tutor but for some reason when I made this deck a while ago.

Here it is:
Defense of the Troll
Defense of the Heart x4
Hunted Troll x4
Worldly Tutor x4
Kodama's Reach x3
Eternal Witness x2
Wrath of God x2
Adarkar Valkyrie x 1
Archon of Justice x1
Darksteel Colossus x1
Goliath Spider x1
Kokusho, the Evening Star x2
Jugan, the Rising Star x1
Keiga, the Tide Star x1
Pearl Dragon x1
Sakura-Tribe Elder x1
Serra Avatar x1
Shriekmaw x1
Visara the Dreadful x1
Silvos, Rogue Elemental x1
Forest x6
Plains x6
Savannah x4
Scrubland x4
Mox Emerald x1
Mox Jet x1
Mox Pearl x1
Mox Ruby x1
Mox Sapphire x1

Have fun.

Eladamri's Call was just added to MTG Forge in 10-18, that's probably why you didn't have it in your deck.

So were the other key cards in the deck...nah it was just an oversight. I happened on Worldly Tutor and didnt seek out the Call. But Im not 100% on the Call...a single mana for a search card to get it next turn might be better in some ways than getting the card in hand this turn for 2 mana.

in some cases it might be, but in this deck there isn't really any turn 2 creatures you will need. You are wasting a draw if you use Wordly Tutor over Eladamri's Call.

Actually I was thinking more about mana economics. Sometimes it is convenient to leave just one mana up for that EOT spell where as two isnt as good. Particularly if you have no intention of playing the creature immediately.

I played "Defence of the Steel" a couple of times and must say that is works nicely!
But you really need the Wrath of God and Armageddon or things can get nasty.
Although I did use Hunted Troll sometimes to get compy up to 3 critters, I only used it if I had a WoG in hand to remove the tokens next turn.

I tend to play this deck deliberately low on lands on the table so I can recover after using Armageddon.
Had to use it a few times as an emergency break to slow compy down, especially against white weeny decks.

But when this deck works, it REALLY works! YAY!

The trolls are quite strong by themselves and are wellworth the 4 point beat down your opponent may hand you...8 points of beating + regen means your offensive should be stronger...There shouldn't need to be any form of wrath to stall out your opponent. Of course if you get 2 colossi out it should be all over anyway.
