Why OPT and not MWS?!?

Postby ACEofSPADEs » 02 Oct 2009, 01:39

I've been in and out of the scene lately and recently on my way back in I've noticed that OPT has been around for some time.
How much time? I don't know exactly as there doesn't seem to be anyone able to answer that question.

I have noticed one thing though, no one seems to use it.
Maybe because there is no real dedicated server for it or that it's not being advertised? I don't know exactly.

It's a decent piece of software, don't get me wrong. Seems bug free for the most part and if developed slowly but surely it can become much better. It's already in it's last beta stages and the version we see now is most likely what it would be ultimately.

But, my question is: Why OPT and not MWS?

I'm sure people rarely use Apprentice, if at all anymore and everyone seems to have switched over to MWS. Now, why would people switch over from MWS to OPT? Maybe I'm missing something and someone needs to enlighten me.

It's not being widely used, because there is no advertisement for it from my side yet. Simply because I don't think it's ready to be used by the same number of people that use MWS. Just think about it, now about 20-30 people can feed me bugs, when that number becomes 200 or even 2000, I'd probably go insane sorting out the duplicate bug reports.

After 1.0 I'll run a nice little cash prize tourney on a popular league to make it more known to the public.

Some features OPT has and MWS doesn't:

- Multiplayer
- Native Momir support when connected to a server
- Drafting
- Ways to watch games as they happen of load a replay file (still some bugs on this though)
- Central server with chat and moderation capabilities (kick/ban/etc)
- Extentend theming capabilities (need to write a guid on this)
- Automated patching for new sets, no need to mess around with masterbases, selecting top grids, pressing ctrl+m and pasting text that may or not be correct.
- Some more stuff, but I'm busy atm hehe :)

Cheers.

Also, OPT is under active development and bugs get fixed. MWS is not being developed and bugs are impossible to fix. And features are missing from MWS, such as no support for Mythic rares, etc. etc.

I think that OnlinePlayTable is poised to be the future of this 'scene', if nothing significant happens with MWS and soon.

MWS bundle is DISCONTINUED, current only through M12

Free as in beer but is it free as in speech? I mean, you still can't get or peer review the source code of OPT, can you?

In that case what guarantees that OPT will not share the same fate as MWS as:

MWS is not being developed and bugs are impossible to fix.

There are no guarantees obv. If I get run over by a bus tonight (knock on wood), the project will halt.
I do not plan to give out the source code until I no longer want to work on it and by that time the "framework" will allow for it to be open source and cheat-proof.

Anyway, the 1.0 release (note that MWS never came to 1.0), will be a version that can last for years to come, since it will be at least equal to MWS, without the bugs.

Sit back, relax, enjoy.
