OPT Tutorial
by Strainer » 11 Nov 2009, 21:40
For the last few days, I have written an extended tutorial for Online PlayTable. The tutorial is written in html and features many helpful Screenshots. I have decided to upload it here, as I first want some opinion on it.
I hope this helps a lot of players making the change from MWS to OPT, and also answers all the questions on how to use it.
The tutorial features the following chapters:
Basics
Please give me feedback on the tutorial and feel free to improve it anytime.

Okay, in five seconds, I have this suggestion:
There's no such word as "inofficial". Try "unofficial".
Also, the background you chose makes it a little difficult to see the clickable links. I suggest styling the links a sky blue, or washing out the background a bit.

Why don't you place it on wiki? This way other users can help you extending the tuturial and fixing errors.Strainer wrote:The tutorial is written in html and features many helpful Screenshots.

Perfect idea, will start immediately with putting it on the Wiki. I could also translate this tutorial into German, maybe having a few other languages would help even more.
Thanks for all your feedback.

Wow, thanks!
A wiki would be great yeah, so I can edit it when things change a bit here and there.
0.99n won't have that many changes though, just more features
I could also add a section on the wiki for the server once it's released to the public.

If you really want to do it give advance notice to me (I'll install several wiki extensions to make it easier).Strainer wrote:I could also translate this tutorial into German, maybe having a few other languages

OK, I'm now finished including the Tutorial in the wiki. The only thing I wasn't sure how to do is the inclusion of the fullscreen Screenshots. (I uploaded them to an external image hoster for now)
I won't translate it in German before next week, but thx for your help GoblinKing.
I hope this will help boosting OPTs popularity a bit, let's hope the best.

I've made a template. Create all translated pages as a /de subpage and add {{Languages}} word at the beginning of each page. Look at the example: http://www.slightlymagic.net/wiki/OPT_TutorialStrainer wrote:I won't translate it in German before next week

I just started using OPT and I must say that it is an amazing free alternative to MWS. This tutorial is a great start but documentation is definitely the weakest part of OPT so far.
It'd be nice to see a quick write up of what all the things in Options->Settings do. I'm newish to magic and am not sure on all the terminology in settings. Most of it is easy, but it's still nice to know for sure.
It'd also be nice if there was a link to the Wiki on www.onlineplaytable.com
The main page on the official site is a little sparse. I know there is a guide at http://www.onlineplaytable.com/guide.html but it isn't accessible from the main page.

Hi,
Because OPT isn't final yet in design, it could be a waste of time to write a lot of documentation. For example, the theming area will be rewritten in a future version. The guide.html is some old junk google keeps cached, I think I'll just delete the files from the server.
And remember, if it was hard to create, it should be hard to use!
Just kidding obv.

Well it's nice to see how amazing the program is when it isn't even 'final' yet. It really does seem great already. It'll definitely be nice to see the finished package that has all the documentation and glitz.
