Counter images on cards
by Jaedayr » 03 Oct 2011, 19:56
I like the new counters that appear on cards. Would it be possible to make them not cover up the power/toughness on the bottom right corner of the card? Maybe make them a little smaller and/or rearrange them a bit? And I also like the new attack/defend/etc icons from a couple days ago.

Glad you like the new graphic pieces. The reason that I made the counters the size I did was that, even though the card status icons work with larger scale cards, I felt that the counters would seem too out of place. But its a quick thing to scale them, so do we:
1 - shrink the image
2 - move the image
3 - try change stacking order to move it behind the power/toughness
4 - leave as is
Personally I like it as is as it only overlaps when there's loads of cards and I vastly outnumber the AI (so not too concerned about individual p/t anyway). But moving the counter images up a little should also solve it and keep the casual look.

I assume you noticed that the counters "disappear" when the card is too large. If I shrink the window that the card is in, thus making it smaller, the counter image returns. Is the counter image limit on a card 4? Oh, and the attack and defend images rock!

I've been limiting the max card size with Sloth's fix yesterday so hadn't observed the disappearing trick. Maybe I could create two sizes so that when the bug with the disappearing card state icons is resolved there can be a set for larger scaling and for smaller scaled cards.jeffwadsworth wrote:I assume you noticed that the counters "disappear" when the card is too large. With regards to the 4 counters limit, that was a decision Sloth made when he requested the counter images. It just gets silly trying to make images for the people with 2867 counters on their creatures

It might be worth considering having a one pixel white colored border surrounding these icons as it might help to make them a little more visible. Just a thought.

I think moving the counters from the right side to the left side would fix this problem. I'm also thinking about changing the order of overlay (from bootom to top):Jaedayr wrote:I like the new counters that appear on cards. 1. Mana cost.
2. Counters.
3. Attack/defend.
4. P/T.
Thoughts?

Phasing/Summ. Sickness on the same level as Attack/Defend? We can probably just call that layer "Card Status"

The problem is that it would play havoc with the cast shadows (because of the transparency, adding a border would create a white fill behind the shadow). I also think they're visible enough and they add a certain realism, which is why I created 3d models then rendered out the different images rather than creating counter 'icons'. I just think that once we have background play-mats implemented, The more realistic look will be the way forward. That's just my opinion though. There are ways to add the white border without too much extra effort, but the shadows would best be removed then. So if anyone else would prefer this I'll create them.... might just do it anyway then everyone can use whichever image set works best for them.Chris H. wrote:It might be worth considering having a one pixel white colored border surrounding these icons as it might help to make them a little more visible. Sounds excellent (new positioning and revised order)Sloth wrote:I think moving the counters from the right side to the left side would fix this problem. I'm also thinking about changing the order of overlay (from bootom to top):

It would also be a step forward for both realism and card readability (for the "Counter icons covering PT" case) if the counter icons (and attack/block/summoningsick/phasing icons?) would be scaled up and down with the card.
I have NO idea how feasible this would be, though.
