Domain Name
by Rob Cashwalker » 08 Dec 2010, 04:34
I'm working on an auxiliary site for Forge. A place to store some data that Forge can access programatically later on.
I have one free site, forgedb.net78.net, where I started to play around with a database for Oracle text used for generic image generation.
I just started a new free site with a different host, forge.orgfree.com. Here, I'm working on storing LQ image data for the Set Images, but it can certainly be a mirror for other downloads we occasionally need to post.
This host is offering upgraded hosting for 1.99/month. I have already made the purchase, my chanukah gift to the project.... If this works out, I'll see if I can do another year later on.. not asking for donations, but wouldn't turn it down either.. not important though.
I have the option of buying a domain name for less than $10. We don't need one, but it would be nice.
forge.com, forge.net, forge.org and forge.info are all taken. Tried a few things like forgedata and forgesupport, and those are clear. But I think we can do better. Funny enough, someone registered cardforge.com...
Looking for suggestions of domain names that are available, and relevant to Forge.

Not to step on the toes of Wizards I would suggest not storing the card images on a side that is related to the game. Just to make sure. Otherwise I think it's a good idea!
I don't care a lot for domain names, but what about: forgeproject?

I understand... but these images won't be nearly as easy to obtain as the HQ's or any of the other sites, like magiccards.info....

I was thinking something like "openforge" but it looks like that's taken.

Why not "cardforge.org"?

O foliage, cloak thy ravaged one

Right now, that's one I'm strongly considering.

Interestingly, mtgforge.com, ccgforge.com, tcgforge.com, and such are easily available...
CardForgeGame.com is available, if a .com name is more desirable than a short name...
Short (5-9 letters) .com's
- SlightlyForge (a nod to SlightlyMagic...
)
- ForgeSpark and SparkForge
[to do: add more later]

definitely not doing mtgforge, since that's why we're just forge now....
I kinda like sparkforge as a name in general....

I just opened a paypal account just for making the payment....
another thing we can do with our own webhosting - quest records may be easily tracked for a leaderboard sorta thing... way-down on my list, but I was trying to think of more things to do, to justify the cost....
BTW, I've settled on cardforge.org for the name. I couldn't keep the free subdomain address with the paid hosting... so I had to make the decision tonight.

Awesome. Let everyone know when the site is up. I can link to it to help boost the SEO a bit.

Will do... I installed Wordpress to begin with on the free version... but the service is so bad I can't keep a connection to the admin pages.... I don't have a lot to say in blog-format, but I need to have some sort of content according to their Terms of Service. We'll have 2GB of space plus 30GB/month of bandwidth.
