Problems running Draft, Vanguard, and Momir Modes
by jzurawski99 » 24 Jul 2009, 15:32
After installing and playing Magic (with no problems) in the standard modes, I wanted to try some of the modifications. I found that I can not run any of the other modes listed in the subject line.
I am running XP (compatibility mode off) with magic files installed in c:\magic. I am using the latest builds and updates.
When I execute the Magic Draft.exe, the game start, but solo duel just plays the regular game.
What happens when I run the Magic Draft.exe is, a command prompt window opens up (and stays open) with the lines:
c:\Magic>cp flag.txt draft.txt
c:\Magic>Magic.exe
To make sure that nothing was missing, I searched the Magic directory and could only find the flag.txt, which only contained the number 1. I could not find the file draft.txt. I check the 20090716.zip archive to make sure that it somehow didn't get deleted and found no such file.
When I try to run the MomirBasic.exe, the same thing basically happens as with the draft mode above. A command prompt window opens with the lines:
c:\Magic>cp flag.txt momir.txt
c:\Magic>Magic.exe
As with the draft version, flag.txt exists in the magic directory, but momir.txt does not. Game play is unaffected, solo duel plays like the regular solo duel.
As for Vanguard, this is a little more destructive. Like both examples above, when I run the Magic-Vanguard.exe, a command prompt window opens with these lines:
c:\Magic>cp Playdeck\*.dck Playdeck\holding
c:\Magic>del Playdeck\*.dck
c:\Magic>cp Playdeck\holding\Vanguard*.dck Playdeck
c:\Magic>Magic.exe
Now after all this happens, when you try to run the solo duel, you no longer get any choices for you or your opponents deck (all that is displayed is the entry <random deck>). If you try to start a match you get this error in a windows popup:
You selected deck is not a legal deck. Please select a new deck.
When you then click the OK button, another pop comes up with: Error loading deck file:.
Clicking the OK button on that brings you back into the solo duel options screen.
The destructive thing about the Magic-Vanguard.exe is, after you have run it once, all of the decks in the playdecks folder are deleted. I had to copy the decks from the Old Playdecks folder back into the Playdecks folder to get everything working again. Hope this info is useful
I appreciate, in advance, any help that can be offered. I would really like to try out these Versions of Magic.
Thanks

Well it sounds like your OS is not playing friendly and coping files. So you can either copy the files manually, or run a draft / momir game the old fashioned way (putting a copy of the appropriate card into your deck).

I've the same problem. I don't think it could be this, because it's not a game I had to install, but I had a "similar" problem with another game and I discovered that the problem was that my OS was in a different language that the one who made the mod. I'm just saying this for information, I'm not expert about this stuff and I could be wrong.
Anyway I "resolved" this problem just playing as jatill said in a normal way, putting a momir/draft card in a deck and playing using that deck with the normal magic.exe.

Thanks guys, I'll just go the manual route. Anyway, I have a number of PC's and Laptops running a variety of OS's XP, Vista, Win 7rc, etc. I'm bound to find one that will work. Thanks for all your help.

I had the same problem too. So I made a little launcher which does more or less the same thing than draft.exe, momir.exe, ...
You can find it there :
