Trying to get Manalink and Shandalar to run

Postby Hinkebein » 04 Aug 2015, 06:54

Morning guys,

just checked the web for a remake of the absolut glorious game "Magic the Gathereing" - Duels of the planeswalker" from 1998. I played this game in 1997 and absolutely loved it.

Now i came across your website from abandonware.
A REMAKE??? YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys, you made me happy. Now i only have 4 questions:

1. What is Manalink?
2. What is Shandalar?
3. Which one of these is a remake of Duels of the planesmaker from 1998?

or

4. What is the difference between Manalink & Shandalar?

----------

Conclusion:

Which one should i download now (looking for a stable version)?

A quick answer would be so much appreciated (you guys don't know how excited i am since i found your site),

best,

Your Hinkebein

Re: Help! This is too good to be true..What is Manalink?

Manalink.3.0 is the duel, gauntlet, sealed, draft and many other modes to play card duels part of the game of Microprose's "Magic the Gathereing" - Duels of the planeswalker"1998.It has a lot more cards and mechanisms to play with than Shandalar but it is not so stable and has a lot more bugs.Follow instructions here:http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=6401#p82367
to get main version and then go to patches to get the latest patch.(you will need that for Shandalar, too.)

Shandalar is the adventure part of the game of Microprose's "Magic the Gathereing" - Duels of the planeswalker"1998.Just today a new patch came out with more new cards and many more features. It is very stable.

Dear Aswan jaguar,

thx a lot for the quick reply!

I stumble already at the first step of teh installation process:

"1. Install Shandalar from any of the recent versions posted in this forum."

I can't find it ;(

Sorry, i feel as having tomatoes on my eyes (as we Germans say =))

Could you help me with a link to it?

Thanks in advance!

---------

UPDATE:

Okay, after some more reading, think i found the file now.

shandalar-577-g371e6d3-ThievesHideout1.zip, correct?

So i will continue with the instalation process, wish me luck..

It does not work.

EDIT:

I try to get it running following the steps from this thread:

viewtopic.php?p=182722#p182722

(page 16) by CirothUngol

At the end, i still get the following error message:

"CdTools.dll" is missing.

I will try to find a solution in the next 30 minutes, then ill give up..Spent the last 2 hours trying to get this to run. All the great work of Korgath, and as it looks atm I will never be able to appreciate it...

Sad greetings,

UPDATE:

It works now. Finally.

Here is the solution for all other players, who will finally stumble across the same problems:

-----

Follow exactly these steps (with virus protection OFF):

viewtopic.php?p=182722#p182722

ATTENTION, this is the crucial step:

3) Download Add_Shandalar_LoremastersTower2_preAlpha.7z from the same folder,

DON'T use shandalar-428-gf299bf9-LoremastersTower3 or shandalar-577-g371e6d3-ThievesHideout1!
These zip-packages DON'T contain the program files needed for Shandalar.

I was looking for ages for the base files needed. They are contained in the Add_Shandalar_LoremastersTower2_preAlpha.7z!

-------

Now i will test if it works to copy the shandalar-428-gf299bf9-LoremastersTower3 over the Shandalar_LoremastersTower2_preAlpha.7z to upgrade to the newest version =)

EDIT:

It worked =)

UPDATE:

Unfortunately, i am stuck again. All cards have no images.

Filtering cards also doesn't work, but with that i could live..the missing pictures though i can't bare.

So again back to searching the forum for a solution..

Which filtering doesn't work?
In your main file that you have installed the game you have a file called cardartmanalink how many images has in it? Did you download the cardart patches?

In this link: viewtopic.php?f=85&t=16964
You need to download 3 cardart updates they are different from main updates which contain cards and abilities code.

Aswan jaguar,

thanks a million.

That solved the issue. If i had read the thread carefully, CirothUngol DELETED all card images on purpose.

Why he did that is beyond me (who wants to play a card game with no images????).

Nevermind, only cost me 5/6? hours to get it to work. On the other hand, he and Kogath are the ones making all this possible.

So thanks a million! I have to defeat 5 wizards now, ahahahahaha harrr!

--------

PS: to answer your questions Jaguar:

1. My CardArtManalink-Folder now contains 14.077 files

2. You are right, the filer still does not work.
If I click on the book on the top left of the screen, i can see my deck. All images are there. But if i want to filter it using the symbols below, nothing happens. Can use any filter ;(.

Do you know what the reason could be?

Hey Jaguar,

it seems the filter does work /though there are some issues, probably with new cards (installed Loremaster Tower 3): if i drag and drop some cards down to the bottom of the screen, some disappear. The others i can put in deck 2 etc.

Anyways, i think i have to get accustomed to the game again. Thus, i 'll post again if i encounter a real problem.

Thanks for the help!

I did it to help assure that the base install (Manalink_20150325.7z) would remain available from my download links. Including the CardArt would more that triple the size of the download; then my allowed limit as a free user would quickly be surpassed; then the download would disappear.

I'm glad you've got the game up and running, but just in case I've posted a new install guide in this thread.
