Vista status?
by jhamma66 » 21 Jan 2010, 06:20
I have searched the forums for any significant progress in terms of making ML or even Shandalar fully playable on Vista. I will be away from my old XP desktop for 2 months in March and April and will just have my Vista laptop with me.
The recent Shandalar mod makes it almost (but not quite) playable on Vista (you can walk around and duel but the cards don't show in the bottom of the deck builder). Has anyone made any further progress? I would love to be able to keep playing ML while I am away from my family.

My findings so far:
ISO Manalink Multiplayer works fine in Vista (though it crashes sometimes).
Basic Manalink 2.0 Multiplayer seems to work too.
The previous updated with the latest patches (from 2011-04-01) from the same page crashes if you try to open it.
If you add Manalink 3.0 on top of that, it still crashes (though he managed to open Deck.exe and start a single player Duel once before the crash behavior started???).
So, my question is, what has been "broken" in the newest versions of Manalink so that the game doesn't work in Vista anymore, and can't this be fixed again?

I have a laptop with Vista, I will have a test running on it with 3.0, but did you already try to apply the DEP settings?

You could always use VMWare and a Virtual Machine. Install VMWare Player, then grab the Manalink 2.0 20100109 Virtual Appliance in my MtG MediaFire Folder. Then just use a USB drive to install Manalink 3.0 to the virtual machine. You'll also need to install Windows Installer 3.1 so that you can install the Visual C Redistributable, both of which you can grab in my VMWare Folder.
This solution is rather large, kinda round-about, and a little resource intensive, but it should work just fine. If the options are this or no Manalink for two months... I'd certainly choose this.

Or you can make a dual boot xp/vista, which is also overkill but well...
I tried to launch ML3 on my vista computer and indeed errors are generated, couldn't make DEP or others .exe properties to work.
It's a pity because Shandalar work just fine, the only thing I didn't try is the patch vs2010sp1...

What DEP settings, do you mean "Run as Administrator"? We already tried that.
If it was me (I have Win7 and everything works fine now), I'd already be using a virtual machine (in fact I already have Virtual Box with various OSes installed for older games + a separate XP hard drive for really desperate cases like Space Empires 5), but it's my friend that has the Vista laptop, and he doesn't want to bother with that (regardless of how much I bug him I'd like to play with a recent version of Manalink with all the cards and fun decks I've made instead of an old bugged version : viewtopic.php?f=76&t=6403 ).

Unfortunately this is a memory address error, I could paste its content but for me it's fairly obscure, will do it once at home though.
DEP is the optional settings you can disable along with the software compatibility in the advanced option tab of the executable properties.

Right click on 'My computer' and click 'Properties'
At the left part of your window click 'Remote setttings'
Click the 'Advanced Tab'
Under 'Performance' click 'Settings' (the uppermost most button)
Now click the 'Data Execution Prevention' (DEP) tab
Select: Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
Click add, and browse your Game installation folder and select Magic.exe/Shandalar.exe
Working On: Life, the Universe, and Everything.
