Add New Cards: Comprehensive Tutorial
by jatill » 26 Feb 2009, 16:52
Edit: this is obsolete. Use the wiki instead.
----------------------------------------------
This is a web-based tutorial that goes step-by-step how to add new cards.
Download the zip here
http://savefile.com/files/1998097
and open index.html to begin.
There is also a copy of the Tutorial on the Wiki. This version is more up-to-date in some sections.
This tutorial covers how to add cards in ASM, but most of the new cards are actually being added in C now. So if you're interested in adding cards, visit the wiki for the C-tutorial as well.
If there is something the tutorial doesn't cover, let me know and I can add it.
If you learn something cool that other people might want to know, let me know and I can add it.

I've learned quite a bit since I last updated the tutorial, so before I code another card, I vow to update the tutorial

I just updated the tutorial a ton.
As an FYI for people that are advanced magic programmers (read: harry and sky), still download this. It keeps track of all the generic subs that have been created. For example, I have a new generic sub for creating dialog boxes and one for generic tutoring.
PS:

That tutorial could use a central page that links the separate documents. You could also just post it here in the forum. More pics is always good too.
<edit> sorry, just reread and saw the bit about opening index.html.

Someone mentioned moving this content to a wiki (http://www.wikia.com), and I think it's a great idea. If some non-developer is looking for a way to contribute, this would be the thing for you.

I've sent a PM to Huggy and hopefully we will be setting up a wiki for all the info from all the programmers/developers to be able to post and access all of the pertinent info.
Stay tuned...!
-------------------------------------------------
Will have to look further into it. Time constraints do not allow me the time right now.
If anyone else wants to look into this, report progress.

Is anyone willing to transfer the tutorial content into the wiki? If it's any incentive, it'll make me more likely to keep the tutorial up to date

I have to look into how the wiki works as I haven't ever done anything with one before. How the formatting and arrangement of the info and how it all comes together in an orderly fashion is all part of this learning procedure.
Just like I'm trying to do in our forum, I want to have it organized and properly laid out so that each area will be separate and easily found by, in this case, you programming types who will access this crucial info.
Transferring the content from the tutorials should only be a matter of copy & paste once all the formatting and other layout work is understood and completed. I would be more then willing to do that once we get the wiki better setup & understood.

It's mostly copy/paste. The annoying parts will be re-linking the pages together, as well as sticking the images somewhere.Bog Wraith wrote:I have to look into how the wiki works as I haven't ever done anything with one before. That's the genius of the wiki. You don't have to worry about structure in the beginning. Just dump everything in to the wiki, and people can contribute by fixing it up/adding more information.Bog Wraith wrote:I have to look into how the wiki works as I haven't ever done anything with one before. Well, then go ahead and lets see what happens.
Just try and post related material together and we'll adjust it accordingly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT
After seeing what was added and how good it looks by what jatill and others have done so far with the wiki, I have to say that you guys were right.
So far, even in this early stage, I really like the way it looks and how organized it is.
Well done guys!

Thanks to whoever transferred the tutorial. It looks fantastic. Would it be too much to ask to transfer the rest of the content too (annotated cards, reference section, etc)?

Snacko did that tutorial transfer. You can always view the recent changes section to see who did what.

I added a new tutorial section for the awesome (and much easier) new method of coding we have. Could someone give the first part (Getting Started) a spin and let me know if it works? Thanks.
