Magic: The Gathering Game and Manalink Patches
The most complete selection of links ever offered anywhere.

MOK'S MANALINK 2.0 VERSION
We recommend that most people, and especially new users, start with the original Mok's version 2.0. It is pre-patched and ready to go. All the other files here are for archival purposes. Unless you're an expert at using old systems and have some specific reason for doing otherwise, USE THIS VERSION:
LINKS MISSING
Microprose MTG Mok's Manalink 2.0 Version.part1.rar (92.77 MB)

You should not need to use the par2 check file, and how to use it is beyond the scope of this post, but if you'd like to know more about this cool application, see the quickpar site.

This is a full version CloneCD image that has been ECM'ed to save space. Unrar the file, then drag and drop it onto unecm.exe to convert it.

This patch adds all the new cards and removes the CD check. This patch replaces both Manalink 1.32 and Manalink 2.0 so they do not need to be installed. Unrar the archive, then copy the new files over the old ones.

1. Sets screen resolution to 1024x768 (or it will be corrupted in first card screen).
2. Fixes "stuck" variable messages in cities. Most obvious is "Do you want to buy this card (Y/N)?" It is not visible without it.
3. Also, on my machine all "wise man says" was empty without the fix.
4. Maybe it influences something else, I don't know.
Apply this fix if you need it. It first requires installation of the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit.

TUTORIAL VIDEOS and MANUALSThe tutorials have not worked since Windows XP, but hip63 found a clever way for you to see them. After many hours of hard work, testing, tweaking and optimizing, here they are. This has never before been done and is a CCGHQ exclusive!

RUNNING NATIVELY
This game is a 16 bit application released for Windows 95. It runs in Windows 98, but not in Windows XP. Not even in compatibility mode, which is very frustrating. So, if you want to see the tutorial videos the way they are supposed to be, you need to play the game in Win 95 or 98. Setting up your machine to dual boot is a lot of trouble, but there is an easier way, and that is to use a Virtual Machine.

OPTION 1
CirothUngol has preinstalled the game into a package so that you can play it using the free VMware Player. First, get the player and install it.
VMware-player-2.5.2-156735.rar (43.91 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mmziymhzvmk

Then download the package and extract it.
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 1 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 2 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 3 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 4 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 5 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 6 (of 7) 99 MB
ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance Part 7 (of 7) 44 MB
par2 Check File for ManaLink 2.0 VMWare Appliance 36 KB

Now run the player, click "Open" and point it at the file ManaLink_2.0.vmx. It should be in the extracted folder along with the HardDrive file ManaLink_2.0.vmdk. Remember, we're talkin' Windows 98 here (well... 98micro), so it'll take a minute or so to boot up. While playing, VMWare Player will write to the .vmdk file just like a HardDrive, so it'll save your Campaign, Gauntlet, Tournament and new decks.

OPTION 2
If you prefer, you can use the free virtual machine from Microsoft. You can use either Virtual PC 2004 or the newer Virtual PC 2007. We don't have a preinstalled package for that, you'll have the fun of doing it yourself!
Virtual PC 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/deta ... laylang=en
Virtual PC 2004 SP1.zip (18.18 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?2ttwtgzm3j0 -or-
http://rapidshare.com/files/206553113/V ... 04_SP1.zip

After installing your virtual machine, you'll need to install Windows 95 or 98 onto it. 95 is smaller, so here it is:
Windows 95.rar (20.52 MB)
http://rapidshare.com/files/206557270/Windows_95.rar
Make sure your virtual hard drive is no bigger than 2048 MB.

After installing Win 95, you'll probably want to get files from your real computer to your virtual one. To do that, first go to Action/Install Virtual Machine Additions. If you are using Win 95 under VPC 2007, you'll get an error. The solution for that is to use the VPC 2004 VM Additions instead of the ones from VPC 2007.

VPC2004VMAdditions.rar (8.59 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?gyzlymzzxxy -or-
http://rapidshare.com/files/206612649/V ... itions.rar

After the additions have been installed, go to Edit/Settings/Shared Folders and add a folder.

When trying to run the tutorials you'll probably get a "Video not available, cannot find 'vids:IV41' decompressor" error, which means you need to install an Indeo codec:
codinstl.exe (1.77 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?nnyzoj2z12y -or-

magicg.zip (74.42 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?mrymyody4zk -or-
http://rapidshare.com/files/156798674/magicg.zip
The HOTU site is down but we have the file here! This is already patched to 1.32. Extract it then run Setup.bat. It blows out to 214MB thanks to the magic of UHA compression. Add the Manalink 2.0 patch when you're done.

The HOTU rip works fine but is small for a reason---it has had all the animations and tutorial videos removed, and all the audio has been converted to mp3. The original versions of these removed/altered files can be found in the OTHER FILES section below.

OTHER FILES
Videos are missing from the rip versions, and sounds have been reduced in quality, so here they are in full quality. When you do a full installation, there are still a few videos and sounds left behind on the CD, mainly in the Autorun directory. These are used when the CD first starts up and during installation, but not after that. To be complete they are all included. The fonts are here too.

Added the FACE Maker, and the standalone preconfigured DosBox version, no DOS or virtual machine necessary.

incredibly psyched to have found this game again, and even more so to have found a community dedicated to improving it and keeping it alive.

this is all a lot to take in in one look. I've downloaded just about everything I think I could need to get started. is there a guide, either local or from another website, for getting all of this up and running?

UPDATE: MTG DOTP installed (correctly, I hope). not sure what to do with the manalink files.

copy the files inside the manalink update you find here and paste them inside c:\Magic\Program folder if you installed it to the default location. You should put the manalink 2.01 files in first (same location). Then you should look for the art which is put in the c:\Magic\Program\CardArtNew folder. If you are missing some look in the last few manalink threads and you should find all the links you need.

Thanks newmy51.

I just added new tutorial videos from the upcoming CD, I highly suggest that everyone check them out because they're awesome. I also added Spells of the Ancients!

Now AFAIK we're only missing one file, waiting for Bogs...

Thank you guys for the detailed and easy to follow TUT. However, I don't know what I have done differently, but I though I would share with you I have MTG running currently in Windows XP without the need for Win95 or Virtual Machine. It actually seems to run better than way. Speed seems normal, full color, full sound. I love it. Thank you guys again for all the help!!!

Happy Gaming!!

Thanks for the wonderful post!

I downloaded the old underdog version, extracted and ran setup.bat. I'm on an XP system and when I try to run Magic.exe, it gives an error:

---------------------------
Magic.exe - Application Error
---------------------------
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

EDIT:
After installing the latest manalink patch, Magic.exe works, but then it crashes when I Click "World" and try to play Shandalar. Anyone have ideas on how to fix?

Here is what you should do for XP:
Install "Plainswalker" from above
install the "Compatibility Update" from above
install the DOTP.dll update
unpack the manalink21 file into your "Magic" directory and overwrite files

That's it. Should work fine. I have installed on several XP boxes. One had SP2 with .Net Framwork 2.5 The other updated to current.

No, it's applied from within the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit, as linked above. You may not even need it, be sure to play the game first and see if you have issues.

Did it affect the game actually working? Did you have the game installed previously? I remember seeing this but forget exactly why it happened, it could be because some registry entries were left from a previous install.

It begins to look more and more like we need an install guide for this. OTOH, we have another version that's already tweaked out, and if hip63 is done with it I'll go ahead and release that.

I've had it installed before. Two different times. If it dose install and actually lets me play a lot of the game features don't work. Editing my deck, buying and selling cards, when I buy food it depletes a lot of my gold. Exd... I just installed another dl from this page and it still does these things. :(
I've dl and installed the first two and I'm dling the third but, I don't think there are enough people seeding it.

If this is from what i sent you Huggy, then the registry file comes from my install I'm afraid.

Haven't seen or heard anything new from Hip in awhile concerning the all in one CD install. Hopefully, this will be the answer for the definitive game file install when it gets done.

SamuelAugust, downloading a different version won't help. After you uninstall, I think you have to go into the registry and remove any remaining Microprose entries. If you're not comfortable with regedit we can come up with some clean registry files for you.

Bogs, his problem is not related to the version you sent me, NTM I haven't posted it yet. :)
