Evening all :)

Rumours of my demise at the hands of Liliana have been greatly exaggerated. So to celebrate that revelation I've got a few presents for you guys.

Had a few hours to while away doing what I like doing best, namely the card art, and as we're still waiting for the release of the Dragons of Tarkir update. It gave me time to replace the last few pieces of card art in the set which would have needed updating at a later date, due to being either LQ or unavailable at the time.
This archive supersedes the previous DragonsOfTarkirPrelim.zip (dump it), but still includes the original preliminary manalink/ct_all files - http://www.mediafire.com/download/me6km ... Update.zip

I've also had time to collate all the card art for Magic Origins. As before, as I am unaware of which cards will eventually be included in the update, this is a complete set of artwork – the unused artwork will need to be removed once the update is finalised.

If Gargaroz doesn't begin to show an interest again, I'll eventually do at least the cards whose effects' APIs aren't too horrible, probably on the order of once every six or eight months rather than trying to keep up with WOTC. There's all kinds of workarounds that were put in place for individual cards because it was easier at the time than making the engine do the right thing, though, and now the engine can't be made to do the right thing without breaking them all. I don't have the patience to continue jumping through those kinds of hoops.

Something that might help motivate me would be a handy collection of artwork for cards not in the game, but whose sets are. I really, really don't have the patience to sort through a dozen scans of various reprints and promos of a card to see which are actually different artwork, especially not when the scans are distributed zipped by set so I can't just look for all variants of a given card without first downloading every card in existence. Limiting the artwork distribution to those cards in the game is all well and good for end-users, but it's an unnecessary speed-bump while developing.

Even just knowing for sure that the art would be available at release time would be a step up from the current situation.

I suppose the other route is to put the responsibility of downloading art on the end-users, as I understand Forge and so on do. I experimented at one point with making cardartlib.dll scan your CardArtManalink directory at startup to set the equivalent of manalink.csv's Num Pics column, and I seem to recall someone else mentioning they'd tried that; while that's too slow to be practical, I could probably make something standalone that does it, to be run once per update. (Or, hm. Maybe just make it count artwork variants for a particular card the first time that card is referenced.)

Motivating example:
I just spent an hour triaging the unimplemented cards up to the end of the main Homelands chunk sorted by their order in Manalink.csv, and categorized each as "trivial" (about a minute to write the function), "easy" (under five), "doable" (under fifteen), or "hard" (either more than fifteen minutes, or needs research, or not feasible at all). I get 91 trivial, 94 easy, 61 doable, and 36 hard. (Almost all the non-hard ones are from Ice Age and Homelands.) Each card has overhead to write the csv line and assign an address, probably averaging about three minutes each if I do enough at a time.

So an initial estimate of 37 hours for the 246 non-hard cards; that's about a whole week of my spare time. There's people out there who'd like to see most of the rest of Ice Age, sure, but Homelands is unpopular even with the casual players who're still playing. For my part, I'm already going to be unhappy since I'm writing for Manalink and all kinds of things are approximations and all kinds of other things take twice as long as they should because of poor design choices in the past. Essentially all of the time I actually spend running the game, though, is for testing cards that I'm writing; having to do that with blank white artwork for them all is enough to tip me over the edge into not making those cards.

Conversely, I don't think it's fair for me to hand out a list of cards that'll "probably" be in the next version, have someone put together the art, and then come back and say "Whoops, nope, Arcum's Sleigh turns out to be impossible in Manalink no matter how simple it looks, sorry I specifically singled it out for inclusion." Especially not with the prospect of the same thing happening again in a year when I've forgotten about it or another developer gets fooled by it, by which time the processed artwork may have gone missing and may have to be re-edited from the scan.

I don't know how I tried to implement this before, but it must have been fairly braindead, since I remember it taking upwards of 15 seconds. The version I just put together takes about 1.6 seconds starting with an empty disk cache; compared to six seconds to start Manalink and about 10 to read metadata from the decks in my playdeck folder, this doesn't seem unreasonable. About 60ms if your CardArtManalink/ dir is in-cache.

Besides making there be one less thing that we have to bother updating in Manalink.csv, it'll let people put in new art that hasn't made it into the main distro yet without having to rebuild cards.dat, run with a stripped-down download that only has one version of the artwork for each card, etc.

Attached dll works with Manalink, but doesn't do anything for released versions of updated Shandalar except take an extra 700k disk space. Hooray for template bloat.

Old set artwork not a problem. If you've already gone through and made a list of what cards you think might be usable, shame to waste it. I'll collate the artwork for them, process it, and send it on. No worries if all the artwork doesn't get used.

Hard varies from "perfectly doable, but more effort than I'll probably want to bother with" (Illusionary Presence, Thieves' Auction) through "pretty close to impossible in Manalink, but I'll eventually be able to do it in Shandalar" (Deflection, Worms of the Earth) to "I doubt anyone will be able to do it in this engine, ever" (Shahrazad, Equinox). But again, I'd rather have the lot.

No hurry whatsover; I'm probably going to be spending at least a couple more days fighting my current screwup in Shandalar, I haven't even begun to assess how much effort it'll take to get Manalink to build on my current dev machine, and I expect to have less spare time than usual over the next week or two.

I should also draw your attention to this bug report for Narcomoeba's image, and I'm sure just about anyone could do better than my hamhanded attempt at making Muraganda Petroglyphs tall enough to display roughly in the right place in the futureshift frame.

As to the supposed Narcomoeba artwork bug - take it from me, the card stock printings are appalling. The contrast and color varies from set to set, and possibly with each print run - especially in the older sets. That said, I'll knock up a new piece of artwork and post it in the bug forum.

Ok I have a question is there anything in shandalar that you have done that could be correctly put in to fix some of the approximations made to the game or would it or could it be feaseable to work from a fresh original manalink and rebuild as you make shandalar great again.

Could? Yes. Will? Unlikely. Everything is three times as difficult and takes ten times as long when you're trying to retrofit it into working software that needs to be kept working.

No problem I was just curious really. I know that trying to shoehorn anything into anything can be a bear and restarting with a new manalink is just as much of a pain. Let me ask you this are your updates portable? I don't know if that is the right wording or not. I'm curious really I might do some poking around on the original 1.32 manalink. No promises but I seem to remember that the orginal magic.exe and shandalar.exe were merged st one point before one of the updates. Long story short it might be less cluttered than vurrent

About 2/3 of the way through the old cards that I plan to get through, and starting to flag a bit. Will probably release after I do a couple passes through DTK and Origins. BFZ - maybe, maybe not. C15 unlikely, since I have no interest in the format; on the other hand, it isn't very many new cards. (Though I guess if someone feels like going through the full decklists and working out which of the reprints aren't in Manalink yet, that would be good to know.)

I've added csv lines for everything up to the end of C15, including the ~4000 ct_all.csv lines for cards skipped in earlier sets. Other than some early missteps, now corrected, the script has done a pretty good job. Counterspells and other things that have to work at interrupt speed in Manalink still need heavy revision, and tokens need to be added entirely manually; otherwise, I've only had to add effect text and tweak AI play and activate phases. There's no AI Base Value set for the DTK/ORI/BFZ/C15 cards and no Creature Rating Mod set for anything, but that doesn't block a release; the former is only used in AI sealed deck building and a relatively small number of cards programmed in C (a few hundred at most), and the latter is mostly only used in Shandalar as a modifier for buying and selling price.

We're up to 15710 csvids assigned in Manalink.csv. That's about three more large sets away from running out, at 16384. (The new ct_all.csv lines aren't a problem; the limit for those is 30000.) Increasing the limit will hopefully only be moderately difficult in Manalink; it's much more of a problem in Shandalar.

Short of that, there isn't a whole lot of conservation we can do. I skipped adding separate csv rows for changed-type cards - manlands and the DTK monuments and incarnate Theros gods and bestowed Theros creature auras and so on - with the idea of importing the infrastructure I wrote for them in Shandalar, which doesn't need a second id and is more accurate besides (it doesn't change the card's name). Even if all the existing cards that use extra rows for this get rewritten, though, it won't get us even another 100 ids. That's not even enough for the non-reprint cards in a small set.

My devious plans to add the Christmas promos and more Un-cards lie in ruins, but at least with the new ct_all.csv lines and auto-counting Cardartlib.dll I'll be able to add new cards to Shandalar with a minimum of fuss and without having to wait for Manalink. When I can stomach working on Shandalar again, anyway.

Sonic, I've been adding functional reprints of the cards I have art for too, as I notice them. So far, that's Burning Sands, Carrier Pigeons, Darba, Gnat Alley Creeper, Harbor Guardian, Mana Leech, Mobile Fort, and Viashino Runner. (And Shatterskull Recruit, but he can wait for the rest of BFZ.) Would you prefer me to list them as I do them, or just make one big list at the end?
