Re: Challenge Set #3 (spoilers)

Wow I FINALLY beat MoM2. The main jump was finding out that you can use mountains. I just assumed it was going to be artifact lands only. From there I sculpted my list down to that. I got rid of some of the chromatic cyclers for howling mine, and got rid of the sculpting steels for some miserly cards. I also cut Memory Jar and Mirror Universe for being to costly. This deck was fast and filthy. I got more than one win when I wasn't going to get another untap if I didn't solve the puzzle. I went with the misers font because I didn't want to over do it and clog my hand when I was really leaning on bridge to survive and belcher to kill. Actually there are a lot of random one of cards because I love to mise, and also because while they help in a lot of situations I don't need them to win.

Re: Challenge Set #3 (spoilers)

So I am *this close* to beating Master Warlock. I got to round 8 earlier today and simply made a bad decision against rats or I feel like I would have finished. Here's the deck:
4 Plains
4 Island
4 Swamp
4 Scrubland
4 Underground Sea
4 Tundra
4 Wrath of God
1 Time Walk (tempted to ditch)
4 Traumatize
1 Windfall (tempted to ditch)
1 Ponder
1 Demonic Tutor
4 Innocent Blood
4 Barter in Blood
4 Damnation
4 Glimpse the Unthinkable
4 Vindicate
4 Death Grasp
I am seriously considering getting rid of the two cards noted above to add in more blue sorceries that help sort/draw. Innocent Blood is a great card in this deck and it plays very well against everything but the burn deck. Early Vindicates usually become land destroyers if the draw looks good.
Any feedback? I noticed this challenge wasn't mentioned much anywhere on the boards so I figured I would give it a go. I really do think my deck will beat this challenge (I felt great after stuffing Slivers - the Soldier deck has given me some bad beats in the late game). Originally the deck had Balance but it almost always cost me valuable land.

I beat master warlock pretty easily with a burn deck, so I hardly said anything about it at all, but with the strategy you are using, here are the cards I'd consider, if you haven't already:
-Balance (I think this is the best white card ever)
-Thoughtseize, cheap way to get rid of good cards
-Concentrate/Counsel of the Soratami for card draw, or maybe Night's Whisper
-Maelstrom Pulse (you'd have to change your 12 basics into green duals, not a big deal though)
-Mind Twist/Hymn to Tourach/Gerrard's Verdict for discard, whichever you like best
-Rout (if you unlocked it, I'd use it over Final Judgement)
-Smallpox for quick creature removal
-Yawgmoth's Will, just because it's awesome
-Personal Tutor for sorceries, or Imperial Seal if you want to be able to get a land when short, too
Obviously, you won't use all of those, but switching Barter in Blood for Rout, or Death Grasp for Maelstrom Pulse would probably be an improvement.
I think I'd keep Time Walk, mostly for the ability to get your early land out faster in this deck, since it is a bit slow, but Windfall can probably be removed without problem.

Finished Master Warlock with this list on Sunday:
.1773 2 Barter in Blood
.1509 2 Corrupt
.1275 4 Damnation
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.1772 4 Innocent Blood
.1510 4 Night's Whisper
.1899 4 Living Wish
.1937 4 Maelstrom Pulse
.1017 2 Diabolic Tutor
.1121 4 Pyroclasm
.593 4 Chain Lightning
.1886 1 Burning Wish
.9 4 Badlands
.241 4 Taiga
.12 4 Bayou
.239 12 Swamp
Originally went BG but the deck was a bit too slow and tended to get overwhelmed, never geting past the 7th round in quite a few attempts. Removing the discard for Chains,.Clasm and Burning Wish made lots of difference and I was able to finish on the 2nd try. Living wish was great, allowing me to fetch the kill condition, which was usually between Platinum, Visara, Kokusho, Lord of Extinction or Hellkite Overlord depending on circumstances. Tutors usually fetched Living Wish. Splashing red also allowed me to fetch Ali, which is GG against some decks by himself. Removed Regrowth as the 61st card in the deck but there should be better choices to cut than that.
Donate made things go very smoothly on the final round of 5:1, having got two previous crashes recently
Also finished Epic on the first try with a slightly tweaked Somacat's Epic Oath deck. It was very easy.
Finished Enchanted Evening last night:
.710 1 Land Tax
.1749 2 Honden of Infinite Rage
.1744 2 Honden of Cleansing Fire
.1745 2 Honden of Seeing Winds
.289 3 Luminarch Ascension
.726 4 Moat
.968 4 Pacifism
.1956 4 Collective Restraint
.1975 4 Propaganda
.1262 4 Porphyry Nodes
.44 3 Control Magic
.627 3 Threads of Disloyalty
.254 4 Tundra
.189 3 Plateau
.266 3 Volcanic Island
.188 7 Plains
.126 7 Island
Three or four tries with this one before I beat it. The main difference was the addition of Porphyry Nodes instead of a playset of the underwhelming Land Tax as well as avoiding Burn, Slivers and the Vampire deck. The latter killed me, once with a (presumably bugged) Vampire Nocturnus who let all his pumped guys fly over my Moat while revealing a Swamp on the top of his library.
The winning attempt was rather easy. I faced two Worship Elves (Nodes decimated them), White Weenie, UG Gro, the Turbo Fog deck in which the AI milled itself to death as usual, a couple of Bitterblossom, Hegemon and the Mirror in round nine. I wanted to avoid Slivers because a quick start can be difficult to come back from as well the Vampire deck and Goblins and Burn. Have a chance against Burn, as on one of my previous attempts it was taken apart by Luminarch Ascension, as it takes the AI 5 or 6 turns before it starts casting anything, in an attempt to kill you in one turn.
Collective Restraint/Propaganda were the stars, with Nodes slowing the Ai down before I can get CR/Prop in play. Luminarch Ascension and/or the red Honden as the win condition. The Control Magic/Threads werent really used (but it was fun to steal both of Gro's Lorescale Coatls
), as the blue enchamtments were enough most times. Moat wan also not cast very much, except against the elves and WW where it shined. The one matchup that I was worried about was the Mirror. Most Mirrors are easy but this one had the potential of a long drawn out game. As it turned out, the AI played loads of land but did not cast a single spell the entire game an I won with Angel beats.
Completed Sliver Nation with Hulk Flash a few hours ago:
.1687 4 Disciple of the Vault
.1677 2 Arcbound Ravager
.514 4 Ornithopter
.1317 4 Phyrexian Walker
.1853 4 Protean Hulk
.1850 1 Flash
.1084 1 Merchant Scroll
.17 1 Black Lotus
.457 1 Mox Diamond
.165 1 Mox Emerald
.166 1 Mox Jet
.167 1 Mox Pearl
.168 1 Mox Ruby
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.499 1 Brainstorm
.1852 4 Summoner's Pact
.352 1 Mystical Tutor
.312 1 Ponder
.250 1 Timetwister
.333 1 Vampiric Tutor
.331 1 Imperial Seal
.258 4 Underground Sea
.1889 3 Cunning Wish
.1487 4 Polluted Delta
.254 4 Tundra
.1216 2 Seat of the Synod
.1215 1 Vault of Whispers
.1424 1 Lotus Petal
.1440 1 Careful Study
.249 1 Time Walk
Having got to Round 7 a few times with TPS and then either fizzling or getting horrible draws I decided to try Hulk Flash. It took 3 attempts. Got to round 9 on the first attempt but died one turn away from going off when AI cast another Virulent Sliver and poisoned me to death. 2nd attempt got to round 3 but died to a horrible Timetwister draw. I had to rely on luck and bad AI on the 3rd attempt. In Round 3, I mulled but had Lotus, Mox, Land and Hulk, Walker, Pact. Topdecked a couple of lands, hardcast Hulk
and swung. The AI of course lethal blocked and it was game over. Round 5 I was at a point of only having Pact in my hand and lethal damage 2 turns away. Topdecked Flash like a pro and it was GG.
Straightforward for the rest of the rounds due to decent/good draws. Be sure to go off during the AI's Upkeep as it seems that it does not counter anything during it's turn so you can remove the countermagic from the deck (if you're running any).
I'll try Urza's Wannabe and Instant Gratification again. They are proving to be quite difficult. One thing's for sure - Challenge Mode is fun!

Instant Gratification was one of the easiest ones imo, as others have stated UR burn is the way to go. This list isn't optimized but still made it on the 2nd try:
.1136 4 Burst Lightning
.1253 4 Char
.1417 4 Flame Javelin
.1254 4 Incinerate
.145 4 Lightning Bolt
.1948 4 Volcanic Fallout
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.194 2 Psionic Blast
.566 4 Electrolyze
.1782 4 Fire // Ice
.1923 1 Fact or Fiction
.126 9 Island
.164 11 Mountain
.266 4 Volcanic Island
Here's what I used to beat each challenge in round #3, post if you want a decklist for any of them.
*Gather No Moss - All the good green and white walls + 4 Living Wish.
*Enchanted Evening - UBW Creature hate with Luminarch Ascension as finisher.
*Master Warlock - aww1979's token deck above.
*Urza Wannabe - 28 planeswalkers + 4 Oath of druids, 1 Iona, 1 Platinum angel. Lame I know
*Instant Gratification - UR burn deck above.
*Gimme! - Mono blue with Time Walk, Ancestral Recall, Sol Ring and Cunning Wish as wild cards.
*March of the Machines 2 - Bridge/Skullcap deck with belcher as finisher, posted earlier in the thread.
*Easy as 1, 2, 3... - Control Version of Oath with Idyllic Tutor to find it.
*The Perfect Storm - Dredge deck with Bloodghasts.
*Sliver Nation - Dredge deck with 4 x Crop Rotation to find bazaar faster.

How many tries (roughly) did Gather No Moss take you? I tried that deck a few times (WG + 4 living wish) but I gave up because walls are not very good :p Plus, I can live without Wall of Roots. If it wasn't very hard, I'd take an evening some time to finish it, if that is long enough.

It's one of the harder challenges in this set for sure, but mostly because it takes so long to finish the games that you really don't feel like trying again after losing. The hardest matchups by far are the aggro-control decks that sport Force Of Will, Daze, Counterspell etc. since you're toast if they counter your 4 business cards and you can't stall until they run out of cards. You can bait counters with some of your walls though, it seems like the AI usually counters Sunweb and Carven Caryatid if it can. Depending on board position the cards I usally used Living Wish for was:
* Iona, Shield of Emeria - against anything with spot removal and monochrome decks if you've clogged up the ground.
* Felidar Sovereign - default win condition for slow games.
* Magus of the Moat - buys time to stabilize against most decks.
* Baneslayer Angel - for games when you need to race and don't have mana for Iona.
I had the cpu run out of card space and crash in some games that dragged on too long so go for the win as soon as you have a wish and an opening. As a sidenote I tried to dodge the challenge first and made a deck with 56 Forests, 3 Oath of Druids and 1 Progenitus and made it as far as round 7 before mulliganing to oblivion. With 6 freebies like the planeswalker challenge I'm sure it could have been done. Maybe something for Jatill to think about when designing future challenges: when given free cards Oath of Druids is the default choice against the current gauntlet and when you can play any deck Dredge is pretty much always the best choice.

That's pretty funny actually. I should try that in the Planeswalker challenge, since it's the only one I haven't beaten yet. If people want to use cheap strategies, that's fine by me. But that's why a lot of the challenges have deck-building restrictions.Systral wrote:Maybe something for Jatill to think about when designing future challenges: when given free cards Oath of Druids is the default choice against the current gauntlet

@systral: Ok, sounds about like what I was doing, only you had more patience than I did :p
@jatill: I was actually thinking I might try to redo the challenges, but impose a self-made banned list including the cheapest cards for challenge mode, like Oath of Druids, Moat, Platinum Angel, and that kind of thing, or maybe even all the restricted cards, too. My favourite decks have always been creature decks, and I didn't do very many of those in the challenges.

Finished a three more challenges. First, Instant Gratification:
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.1889 4 Cunning Wish
.1762 4 Fireblast
.1254 4 Incinerate
.145 4 Lightning Bolt
.1948 4 Volcanic Fallout
.1136 4 Burst Lightning
.266 4 Volcanic Island
.1782 4 Fire // Ice
.566 4 Electrolyze
.1771 4 Hidetsugu's Second Rite
.1923 1 Fact or Fiction
.352 1 Mystical Tutor
.164 12 Mountain
.126 5 Island
.266 4 Volcanic Island
Got it on the 2nd try. The key card here was Hidetsugu's. I tried the challenge with a Hidetsugu-less build (with Echoing Truth instead) and in about a dozen attempts, the best that I got to was round 5. The main problem with that build was running out of steam or being overwhelmed by pumped-up guys. Hidestsugu effectively halves the opponent's life so it becomes much easier. it was my main Wish target as well. There were only a couple of matches where I didn't use it. Just be careful with the comp cracking Fetchlands and putting himself on less than 10 life. The Gold cards were helpful with dealing a single point of damage if necessary.
Gimme! was completed with this last night:
.1000 4 Confiscate
.44 4 Control Magic
.627 4 Threads of Disloyalty
.630 4 Vedalken Shackles
.1341 4 Treachery
.985 4 Bribery
.1325 3 Annex
.47 3 Copy Artifact
.451 2 Ring of Ma'rûf
.1923 1 Fact or Fiction
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.126 26 Island
Actually it was quite a fun and solid deck. Was one of my favourite challenges as well. Took 4-5 tries to complete it because of either running into Burn (an autoloss with this deck really), the comp getting a very fast start, or making a dreadful play error, like wanting to Ma'ruf for an Echoing Truth to bounce Worship against elves an swing for the win, but getting distracted and fetching a Morphling instead, then while waiting for the 2nd Ma'ruf to show up, Annexing an Savannah while on 6 life forgetting that all elves have forestwalk and getting killed the following turn
.
Anyway, my first version of the deck had 3 Oaths and a DS Colossus as the wild cards and I got to round 7 on the first try only to lose to Kithkins. Changed the wild cards and added Bribery instead of the useless Twincast (and a single copy of the almost equally useless Annex) and the deck became far more solid. The key card was Shackles, it is superb once you have it online and Copy Artifact was used to make more. You can decimate the AI with a couple of them in play.
No real problems in the winning attempt apart from the 2nd round where I won while on 1 life against Kithkin and final two rounds. Round 8 was against Rats and I won because of Annex on the forth turn giving me the much meeded 5th mana. What also helped was the fact that the AI refused to attack even when it had 6 or 7 rats in play to my 3 and I was on 9 life. I had Ma'ruffed an Echoing truth earlier so I was not in damger but it did give me time to Ma'ruf a 2nd Shackles and play it, so when the AI finally attacked I bounced 13 rats back to it's hand and it was effectively game over. I had chosen the Ma'ruffs taking into consideration the mirror match so I kept a particularly slow hand in the final round, thinking that most of my cards would be useless anyway. I gulped when I saw a plains on the other side and realising that it was Kithkins. It was close but I managed to stabilize on 5 life, one turn away from losing by playing a Treachery on one of the pumpers followed by a Bribery for Cloudgoat Ranger to give me enough blockers and taking the game from there with Shackles. Overall it was quite a fun challenge. Just hope that you don't draw Slivers or Burn. And fix or use something other than Jace (like Traumatize) to speed up Turbofog, it's mill ability autotargets you instead of the comp
And finally, the Urza Wannabe winning list:
.807 4 Ajani Goldmane
.822 4 Ajani Vengeant
.823 4 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
.802 4 Garruk Wildspeaker
.808 4 Liliana Vess
.1839 4 Pernicious Deed
.625 4 Sarkhan Vol
.613 4 Sorin Markov*
.12 4 Bayou
.212 4 Savannah
.216 4 Scrubland
.241 4 Taiga
.9 4 Badlands
.189 4 Plateau
.239 2 Swamp
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.17 1 Black Lotus
A few attempts here. It's a rather difficult challenge but I got through it last night. Deeds are the key and I often mulled hoping to get them or Demonic Tutor. If you can clear the board and slap down a Sorin or Garruk you've pretty much won, If you can keep Sarkhan in play three turns without getting attacked you've also won. Those three are best Plainwalkers in this deck and I was underwhelmed with Liliana, Elspeth (though he's good for tokens chumping to protect Sarkhan) and especially Vengeant. Goldmane is pretty decent though I'd rather have Garruk/Sorin after a Deed. Had Damnation in place of the Lotus at one point but Lotus is better.
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.1889 4 Cunning Wish
.1762 4 Fireblast
.1254 4 Incinerate
.145 4 Lightning Bolt
.1948 4 Volcanic Fallout
.1136 4 Burst Lightning
.266 4 Volcanic Island
.1782 4 Fire // Ice
.566 4 Electrolyze
.1771 4 Hidetsugu's Second Rite
.1923 1 Fact or Fiction
.352 1 Mystical Tutor
.164 12 Mountain
.126 5 Island
.266 4 Volcanic Island

I have not beaten the master warlock round due to crashes, but this deck seems to have a strong matchup against everything but burn and the mirror matches.
It is on the back burner after having to play 3 mirror matches in a row and then loosing to a crash.

Re: Challenge Set #3 (spoilers)

It's probably the same deck everyone else used, but I finally got around to doing Gather No Moss, thinking I might use Wall of Roots in Challenge Challenge in set #4.
.1165 4 Sunweb
.305 4 Carnivorous Plant
.1250 4 Wall of Blossoms
.273 4 Wall of Swords
.1814 4 Wall of Reverence
.1186 4 Vine Trellis
.212 4 Savannah
.241 4 Taiga
.189 3 Plateau
.254 3 Tundra
.252 3 Tropical Island
.12 4 Bayou
.216 3 Scrubland
.451 4 Ring of Ma'rûf
.545 4 Wall of Spears
.1757 4 Plumeveil
Usually the win was Ring of Ma'Ruf for Test of Endurance/Felidar Sovereign, after sitting on Wall of Reverence for awhile. Sometimes I needed to get a Moat or something first to buy some time, or CoP:Red, or something like that. Against the all-gold deck with Gaddock Teeg, I had to play ~50 turns because Teeg hit the table before I could get a Ring out, so I just waited until AI ran out of cards, which he did first thanks to his fetchlands :p Faeries killed itself with Bitterblossom, and I think the other 7 matches were won with ToE/Felidar or Rolling Stones.
The non-WG duals are for Plumeveil and anything I might want to use the Ring on. (one game I took Energy Flux against an artifact-heavy deck early on, for instance)

So, strange as it sounds, I got to round 10 of Enchanted Evening with a deck full of Auras. I thought it might be fun to put the Pit Fighting reward to good use... So I just filled the deck with boosters for the free Pit Scorpion you get each game.
Here's the list:
4 Savannah
4 Tropical Island
4 Bayou
4 Underground Sea
4 Tundra
4 Scrubland
4 Worship
3 Serra's Embrace
4 Control Magic
3 Unholy Strength
3 Rancor
3 Regeneration
2 Wild Growth
3 Fertile Ground
3 Sleeper's Robe
3 Armadillo Cloak
2 Threads of Disloyalty
3 Sarcomancy
It started as a mere exercise in amusement, but it got me pretty far on the first try.
Anywho, if anybody has any kind of ideas, I'm all ears!
