Idea : Tournament Mode

Postby Salbei » 20 Mar 2010, 06:28

The basic idea is to emulate a small/big pseudo-constructed Tournament with its own meta.

Tournament Mode

Deckfolder:
Playdeck/Tournament/<name> Folder (could choose between multiple pre-created pseudo "metas", players could create their own and share it with others)
(the player deck and the AI decks should be in there - use common sense , just decks the AI actually can play without gimping itself over and over again).
Might be wise to design Decks for each color and let the player choose one of the pre-created decks to play with for a decent experience (the AI could sideboard "smart" this way - see below).

Tournament Rounds:
Variable rounds (small tournament - large event)
5-8rounds - best of 3 (gauntlet would be great - but you don´t drop out of it if you loose , not sure if this is possible).
After that a few rounds of single elimination (3 rounds ?) (loss = your out).
Could even go so far to make a won sealed deck tournament a prequesite to play this tournament - prolly a bad idea since it would take forever to do 2 tournaments in a session (without crashes etc)

Sideboarding:
sideboarding between the games would be awesome if it is possible.would also be amazing "wishes" would be limited to your sideboard if possible.
I dunno if the AI is able to play each other in the background like in "sealed deck" (or if they play at all there ^^ )

I´ve found this example how the AI could "sideboard" within the old shandalar decks (gonna be pre sideboarding - a little downer, but should make up for the weak AI).
Maybe it is a shandalar only feature - haven´t tested it yet.
But if it should work then you could emulate "real sideboarding" with it.
Like 5 different "fixed" Decks ,one for each color,so you could emulate smart sideboarding with a minimum extra work (editing the decklists to what they should sideboard against each deck).

Code: Select all
Lord of Fate (Bl/Wh, 4th Edition)

.188   11   Plains
.239   11   Swamp
.55   2   Dark Ritual
.28   3   Castle
.108   3   Healing Salve
.112   3   Holy Strength
.259   3   Unholy Strength
.550   4   Yotian Soldiers
.221   4   Serra Angel
.736   3   Osai Vultures
.182   3   Pestilence
.871   2   Necropolis of Azaar
.70   3   Drudge Skeletons
.616   2   Divine Transformation

.vNone
.514   3   Ornithopter
.vBlack
.930   3   Brass Man
.vBlue
.514   3   Ornithopter
.vGreen
.3   3   Animate Dead
.vRed
.466   3   Amulet of Kroog
.vWhite
.930   3   Brass Man
Would be even better if you could do it like this :
Code: Select all
.vGoblin.dck
.1121   3   Pyroclasm
.145   2   Lightning Bolt
.v5CC.dck
.1261   3   Magus of the Moon
.1727   2   Price of Progress
.vShopaggro.dck
.1435   2   Shattering Pulse
.377   3   Maze of Ith
.vSui.dck
.145   2   Lightning Bolt
.377   3   Maze of Ith
Just as an example. Could still just make mono-decks if this is not possible.

Statistics:
Again i´m not sure if it is possible , but it would be great to have a small statistic window pop up after the tournament.
(win/loss/draw ratio - average turn the game ends etc. )

Summary:
This is raw theory - i got no clue if it is possible at all to create this "feature". Jatill got Drafting/Momir/Challenges to work - so i am very confident this might be done aswell.
If everything else fails then it all could be scripted as another challenge i guess.

I would design very basic decks (including sideboard strategies) for a first version - other custom tournaments could follow or players could create their own tournaments. Would be a nice addition to the game.
If someone could do the needed coding to make this possible then it would be like a customizeable challenge mode.

Post your ideas to get a decent concept first and maybe we find somebody to do the coding for it :)

Edit:
Finished the first couple decks. They are about even in strenght and easy enough to play for the AI.
(sideboard not included yet since i dunno if it is possible to do)

Could be played in a normal Gauntlet in the meantime (backup your old Gauntlet folder and replace it with this playdeck folder).
Simply start a Gauntlet then.
Retired a long time ago. I will not reply.

Re: Idea : Tournament Mode

Postby Bog Wraith » 22 Mar 2010, 14:12

I love this idea and hope that it might be possible to implement some/all of this. My favorite part of playing ManaLink has always been the Sealed Deck module. Having an additional tournament module would be incredible and I really like the thought process that Salbei has written about here.

Can any of this be done? I'm not sure as I have no coding experience, but this would be a tremendous addition to our great game!
