Idea for a future tournament

Postby Shantak » 25 Oct 2010, 13:18

After reading this Monday's Daily MTG article about 11,000 card Vintage Rotisserie draft I figured something like that would do a fun tournament. Manalink Rotisserie with all non-Ante non-Wish cards available for drafting. I guess we might have to limit the number of players to eight (not a problem I think, we had eight this month as well). Drafting could be done in the forum here or on a Google Docs spreadsheet and would probably take plenty of time seeing how we're all around the world and have different schedules - I would consider starting the draft a month in advance to make sure we finish it in time.

Any opinions or improvement ideas?

Shantak, the idea is awesome. The problem is implementation - how do we perform a draft without taking forever. With a live draft limited to 30 seconds per pick they needed several hours to complete the draft. I'm very interested (and want a seat if we do this) but we would need a way to perform the draft in a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe a chat room with a google docs spreadsheet to keep track of picks would work. I am EST (GMT +5) so try to pick some time that would be reasonable for me :)

How to implement this . .

First, I suggest we combine the drafting methods mentioned here. Start out on the forums while attempting to organize a time when we can all be on for awhile and knock out a chunk of the drafting. Who knows maybe we can all be around for 4 hours on a Saturday and get it all done, but I'd rather be doing it slowly on the forums than not at all!

Second, we need 8 people to commit. It wouldn't be too bad if someone dropped right away or very close to the end, but dropping after about round 10 and before round 50 would really hurt!

Sample Google Docs spreadsheet https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiYCIw1BIY3QdEFtcVBZUGZneFBQUEVMSTJpa3FOenc&hl=en&authkey=CPGwkp8F

Random.ORG (for determining draft order) http://www.random.org/lists/

So that looks like a plan to me, we should start as soon as Jatill is back and we have 8 people . . I assume he will want in!

I'm still on vaction, but I have access to a computer now (alieit without manalink on it.) So if someone wants to get this started, I'm ready.

We have 5 people that are interested so far. I'll have time tomorrow to make a new thread with info if no one else has by then, hopefully that will spark some more interest!

I have another idea we might want to 'borrow' for a future tournament.

This was a fun little format I played in back when I was a regular at Star City Games (I also got destroyed in this one, lol).

We could change up any of the criteria to suit Manalink better, but the effort it takes to make one of these decks might still be more trouble than its worth.

Any word on what we might do for December? If we do one, I'm in favour of something that doesn't take much effort, because Christmas will make people pretty busy.

Yeah, I figures we'd skip December, and just play out Rotisserie matches.

Okay, that seems like a good idea to me, too.
