November Tournament discussion

Postby jatill » 04 Nov 2010, 15:06

Tournament Format: old school constructed.
Construct your 60 card minimum deck using only cards from Legends and older. You may use a max of 5 artifacts, and no duplicate artifacts. Use today's vintage restricted list.

1st place: 4 cards
2nd place: 1 card

All competitors are expected to score each round.

If this is going to be this months tournament does it mean we'll hold the draft for next month?

I think the draft will take whole November to do, so we wouldn't have a tournament for this month otherwise.

I'm in, but I wonder if everyone will just make a similar deck as Jatill's B/U Beta meanie deck few months ago. I'm not sure how to top that.

I'd start by adding Mana Drains :) In general, we always seem to get a diverse set of decks, so I'm not too concerned.

Well, one deck stands out to me above all others as best from this time. I don't know if the AI can play it, but I'm submitting it anyway :p

I haven't been around long enough to remember that, but my first thought when I read the format for this one was to build a black/blue aggro deck!

Are we going to use the last manalink update, last tournaments one because it misses lot of cards we can use for this tournament?
Is iso good for this tournament?

I suppose we should use MagicLimited, since it has the most cards from these sets of any version. I didn't think anyone would be missing the removed cards :)

I was a bit uncertain about the restrictions - so i´ve googled a bit.

Limited Edition – Beta October 1993 302 CardsList of Cards
Unlimited Edition December 1993 302 CardsList of Cards
Arabian Nights December 1993 92 Cards List of Cards
Antiquities March 1994 100 Cards List of Cards
Legends June 1994 310 Cards List of Cards

Hope this may help others aswell.

Its an interesting format.
Keep in mind that Mind Twist , Berserk and Fork are unrestricted. That leads to some interesting "new" old decks.

You should also prepare for Moat and/or The Abyss (the AI doesn´t seem to play The Abyss for some reason).
A major thing is that you don´t have to fear Blood Moons - so there is no reason to run basics. This harms the strategic part of the deckbuilding quite a lot, but we will see.

We are prolly gonna see some good old Ernie/Geddon
"The Deck" doesn´t really work with the artifact restriction of only 5 and the AI is horrible with it.

I expect to see :
Ernie/Geddon
Mono Black Weenie
Mono White Weenie
Green Stompy with Berserks
even Mono U
lots of "restriction" splashes

So Creature hosers should be a good meta-option (Control Magic,Royal Assassin, Old Man of the Sea, Moat, The Abyss etc).
Land Destruction or Burn may be used as a meta choice against that and so on.Its gonna get interesting.

I submitted 'the deck' anyway :p I modified it quite a bit though to try and compensate for AI stupidity. In a competent player's hands, it could beat anything else of the day.

I think Salbei's prediction list is pretty reasonable, although I don't expect to see monoblack weenie. I don't remember that being much of a force back then. I hadn't thought about the green deck, but with 4 berserks, I think it has a better chance.

The other deck I expect to see, that doesn't have a name (that I can remember) was a sort of control deck, with lots of removal, like plowshares and mana drains, and then a bunch of fatties, like juzams or erhnams or juggernauts or maybe serra angels. (though not juggernauts here if we can only have 5 artifacts)

I thought a red direct damage deck might work, but then I realized 'the dark' wasn't included, so there was no ball lightning or blood moon, and after that the deck was looking really bad.

Initially i wanted to build something with Workshops and Juggernauts / Trisks etc. but the Artifact restriction made that kinda pointless.Same goes for Icy Manipulator / Winter Orb.

I think it was called Handelman-Deck,but once again that restriction hits that deck too hard.Juggernauts are pretty important in that one aswell.
I´ve been playing a lot of Black with Juzams, Hypnotics Rituals and Moxen when the addon of this game originally came out.The more Weenie oriented Black Knights + Raiders + Bad Moon + Unholy Strength is still a solid deck. The lack of multiple Disks as a reset button hurts this deck too much i´m afraid.

The muliple Berserk route doesn´t seem to work that well without Winter Orbs + the AI is using Berserk as removal too often (Blood Lust + Giant Growth on opponents creature aswell ...) so i ditched that very fast.

Even very simple things like Flying Men + Unstable Mutation came back into my memory :D

Personally i went a different route of an unorthodox "burn" list.Gonna fail against early mid-sized creatures but should beat controlish decks. Not sure if i´m gonna stick with it though.

We currently have 6 entries, and I'd like at least 2 more to start the tournament. Please submit decks ASAP. I'll keep the entry open until I have 8 entries, or Nov 10th, whichever comes first.
