Collectible Card Game Headquarters

A friend of mine and me want to play MAGE online, but he can't connect to any server (public servers/ private server / hamachi). It's just working if we are in a LAN-Network, but we want to play it online, aswell. We already tried updating Java but it didn't work. When i connect to the public server i can see his account on the playerslist, but after a few seconds he gets a disconnect and a fatal error. (He is useing WIN8)
Any suggestions?

Maybe his local firewall on his pc or the firewall of a router he uses.
Does he use a proxy server to connect to the internet?

He doesn't want to change settings at his router (his Firewall is turned off).
We will test it with my internet-connection next time he's here.
