Re: XMage.info Website and Server - offline / online

I wonder if the hosted Xmage file for download is the thing in focus or running the XMage server (or both :-() ).
So it would be good to seperate the two things. I would like to move the basic XMage download from the Xmage.info server to another server/URL.

Using the launcher the loaded config.json can point to any URL. But it would also be more flexible if the location of the config.json could be easily changed/maintained/added within the launcher.

Anybody willing to host the XMage download files?

Or is sharing the XMage file by BitTorrent a good alternate way to go? If the Launcher e.g. would have this feature integrated (don't know if this is hard to do)?

Anyway I'm not keen to handle any offshore server, because I would more like to spend my time to develop than take care of such things.

I think that hosting the download on bittorrent is the way to go. It will be very hard to shut it down. I found this library that provides an open source java client: http://www.staging.threerings.net/snark.html

I'll add it into the Launcher and I'll also make the location configurable from the UI.

Bittorrent seems very interesting, but how to check for the latest version in that case?
Maybe keep those details on the actual server (version number and CRC to avoid modified files) and the rest on bittorrent?
To be sure to have the file always available it should be useful also to let the launcher manage the upload of the file, so that it will always be available to other clients for download.

I guess you can have .torrent file with current version on the site - the actual files are not on the servetr anyway. Other option would be having current version description on the website and .torrents posted to some major torrent search sites.

Sorry about the woogerworks server being offline. It should be back up now.
I had disabled the monitoring / maintenance scripts during the last software update and failed to reenable them causing it to eventually not restart on the last time it crashed.

Got some more info from the provider of the server:

Dear customer,

The offending card image has been removed, however the
claim is against the actual game itself
The copyright image was from the game of http://www.xmage.info
The game itself also uses the copyrighted image.
You have to remove the copyright image.
I wrote as answer:
That's clearly not true. Please tell me which image(s) I
should remove.
Neither the game download nor the game itself running on
the server uses or includes any copyrighted images. If you
think that is not true, you can point me to the file you
think that includes or is such a copyrighted image. If so
I would immediately remove such an image.

People running the client component of the program may on
their systems download or use copyrigted images but It's
not my responsibility and I can't change or influence it
neither have knowlege about it.

Hmm I was thinking...there are images used by the loader, were do they come from?
Also the image with the ships used as background of Xmage, who made it?
If you are the owner (or have the rights) of all those things I don't see what they are complaining about.

The images for the launcher were obtained from this site: http://wall.alphacoders.com/

The site states that images are for "personal, non commercial use". It can certainly be argued that the usage is "non commercial". Whether or not the usage is "personal" is possibly debatable.

If the copyright holders are indeed complaining about the usage in the Launcher I will remove and replace them with public domain works.

Would be useful to have more details about which images they're talking about in particular and who they are.
Why remain anonymous?

I got a new message from the server provider:

Dear Customer,

Allow me to continue this thread
with you.

Accodring to the plaintiff, the problem
of copyright persists.

The plaintiff is saying that the game files of
http://xmage.info/ is also the issue:

http://xmage.info/download/mage-bundle- ... 014-11-08v

1.zip

When the game is installed, the game content and its images

is an infringement of:

http://magic.wizards.com/en/what-is-magic
------------------------------------------------------

Here is the game in action:

http://magic.wizards.com/en/try

-------------------------------------------------------

This is some print screens of the game:

We ask you to remove the infringing content
as soon as possible.

Looks like you'll be needing a new provider...

Ouch, this is not good at all, seems like it's coming from WotC.
It's not clear anyway if they're complaining about the images in the cards or the game structure itself.
In any case I think it's not wise to fight against them, better make them happy...but move the game somewhere else ;-)

why not use mega.co.nz to host?
