I have not been able to connect at all over the past few days even after the update. Any rreason why this would be happening??

Which System, which version do you use?
For sure something on your system (Antivirus / Firewall) is blocking all the ports so the client can't connect to the XMage server.
Check in the firewall rules that "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" can pass through.
