Avatar keeps resetting to default

When I go to preferences/avatar and change it to something other than the top left one, and click save, it doesn't save it. My avatar is still the same.

I am also getting the following message in the Xmage client console:

WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node Software\JavaSoft\Prefs at root 0x80000002. Windows RegCreateKeyEx(...) returned error code 5.

I don't know if that error has anything to do with it.

Seems like java can't save the preference values to the windows registry.

Look here and do what the first two answers suggest.
