Can't Play Matches

Hi i'm new on xmage and am trying to play matches against other people after goldfishing against the AI a bunch to learn the controls. However when i go to join a match or after having posted my own where it would normally connect through to the match screen at least on local nothing happens instead. Just wondering if this is typical problem or if anyone knows what i'm doing wrong thanks.

To play against the AI, start both the client and server. From the client's connect screen, click "L" or select "localhost" from the server select menu. Now when you create a match, you can use "Computer" as an opponent to goldfish against.
