93/94 Format in XMage a Possibility?

Postby SickBoyWI » 01 Apr 2017, 20:15

I've been playing 93/94 Magic, as described on the Old School MtG Blog (this forum won't let me post links, it says I'm too new of a user).
for a while now. It's actually gained much in popularity over the last few years.

I'd like to implement it in XMage, as a format for constructed decks. Does this sound like something that would make it into the main program itself, or does it feel too niche?

I'm sure it would be fine to add, especially since you are interested in doing it. There is some demand for it and a need for testing for events in the format.

I think someone mentioned this on reddit as well. If you're playing proper 93/94 rules, there is a lot of differences to the current rules - damage on the stack, interrupts, different limits on the number of cards, the stack itself worked differently I believe. I think it would be a lot of work to modify that within xmage itself. Unless you're just talking about limiting the decks that can be used?

Yes, old school is really great format.
Even without the old rules it can be interested to play it online.

(Even if it won't smell old paper and beer)

I'd be interested in working on this. I'd say probably use the base banned list from http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.com/p/banrestriction.html with a Chaos orb implementation that looks something like "choose a card, coin flip, if heads, destroy it". That means no mana burn implementation, and a simple deck legality implementation. I can probably crank out the deck checker in a few hours. To make it viable as a format online, the cards will have to be implemented, and that will take a bit longer.

Implementing chaos orb would require adding it to the banned list for all the other eternal formats and commander. Just a heads up.

Edit:
Implemented with those rules. Pull request submitted.

If this makes it into Xmage, I'd also be very interested in playing as well. I anticipate some difficulty in finding players for the format, though, so any efforts directed towards forming a player base, maybe a reddit page or even just an active forum topic here in the Xmage forums, would be greatly appreciated. I swear I'll participate as much as I can.

I used to play a version of this format with friends which we called "original standard" where you could play cards from Beta, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark and Fallen Empires, with a custom ban list (later we added Homelands when Coldsnap was released and Homelands was left without a block - the idea was to be able to play all cards that weren't available in the Block Party format). I prefer that format over 93/94, but it's pretty similar and 93/94 does have an active player community outside Xmage, it's commonly player in Cockatrice and apparently even live.

Sorry for the bump/double post, but I see that this format in now available when playing using the localhost, but disappears from the formats list when you're connected to a server like Xmage.de or woogerworks. What would it take to make it playable while connected to a server as well?
