just ran across this program

Postby bobniborg » 08 Apr 2011, 00:29

Friends and I used to play big multiplayer games back in the day (just after the legends expansion came out). I was going to play with this thing a bit but I cant seem to start a game with myself (well, against computer opponents). It wants me to connect, but I don't want to connect, I just want to play against some AI to check the program out. Is that possible? just DLed the .7 dual pack (client and server)

Hi bobniborg,

Actually you do want to connect. MAGE has been designed as a client/server application in order to allow human vs. human. Unfortunately this means that even just to play against computer opponents you still need to connect to a server. The good news is that you can run both the client and the server applications on the same machine. Since you downloaded the bundled version then you will have both. Run the "startMage" file and it should launch the server and a client. The default settings are for a local server. You can save yourself some steps by selecting "Automatically connect to this server next time". The next time you start MAGE it will automatically connect.

Sounds like you started around the same time I did. Although we mainly played with Revised Edition. Good times.

Have fun and let me know if you need any more help.

hmm, when I tried to connect to local host it wouldn't. Probably something weird on these work computers... hehe, best time to play is at work right :)

OK, so I got it to run but then I got an error starting the game. LOL, I will have to try this on my home computer I guess.

ok, got it working. My mana symbols arent appearing though. Everything is just a box with a little box in the lower corner (and since most of these cards are new I need that). Did I miss something on the install?

Just started, and set it all up. Both servers start, connection is made. I can create and edit decks. But when I start a game, I am just looking at an empty board with nothing interactive. The FAQ implies that it auto-deals and I should be looking at a hand of cards. But it doesn't, and I have no idea what to do.

Where do I go from here?

At least, you are the second who has similar problems.
What OS, java version do you have?

Let's try it this way:
0. Stop any Mage server and client instances
1. Edit /client/startClient.bat
replace
Code: Select all
start javaw -jar .\Mage-Client-0.7.jar -Xms256M -Xmx1024M
by
Code: Select all
java -jar .\Mage-Client-0.7.jar -Xms256M -Xmx1024M
2. Go to /server/. Start startServer.bat
3. Go again to /client/. Start startClient.bat
This time console will appear. Repeat your steps and try to find any exception in client console.

Is there anything? I believe there should be smth.

OK, I tried that, and here's what happened: I still get stuck at the empty play area. The Server looked like this:

And the Client looked like this:
client.jpg

I am on Windows 7 with current Java. Anything?

OK, so I guess this just isn't happening. Three weeks of trying is more than enough.

Hi Professor,

Sorry that nobody got back to you but we have listened and the next release of Mage will include a Windows executable launcher for both the client and the server. This release is literally hours away (24-48). Thanks for being patient. We hope you will find the next version much easier to launch.

OK, I downloaded 2 more releases and none of them work any differently. Should I not expect this to work on Windows 7 or am I missing something?

All I get when a game starts is a blank playfield with nothing to click on. Is anyone out there using this game successfully on Windows 7?

Looks like at least Java 6.24 and 64-bit Windows. But it runs all sorts of 32-bit apps.
