Interrupting interupts - how to ?

Hello. Need a little help here. I am playing 2012 version of Shandalar and I am having a blast. However being unfamiliar with ancient rules of magic I am getting confused if it is possible to interrupt interrupts and if so how.
Scenario: I play a Serra angel, opponent casts powersink. I try to use my counterspell to hit his powersink. Sad result: both of my spells end in graveyard. What am I doing wrong ?
