What card sets were in orginal Shandalar?

Postby leszczu » 11 Nov 2015, 12:35

Hi,
I'm trying to replay Shandalar as it was years ago and I find all the new cards unnecesary. I know I have to disable sets in ini file, but I don't know what sets were in original Shandalar release, and in subsequent update.

Should I enable everything from Promo to Fifth Edition? Or just the core sets?

I think what you want to leave in is everything up to Ice Age but without Fallen Empires.

Why don't you use Shandalar as it was originally then? like it is in 2010 iso installation? :

I had some problems running this version under Win 7. Anyway, I used the neweset Shandalar and enabled only 5th Ed. deck. As far as I remember, all cards are OK.

Other way around. The original Shandalar (with expansions) had cards up to and including Fallen Empire, but no Ice Age, or anything after. I may be wrong, but I believe that without the expansions, only Unlimited (or possibly Revised) cards were included.

However, Shandalar did not include all cards from those sets*. Notably, it did not have any gold cards.
*the cards were implemented, but not turned on. With very minor modification, the cards could be accessed in the deckbuilder.

All of Fourth Edition; most of Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, and The Dark; bits and pieces of Legends; a handful (6?) of cards that only existed as promos at the time like Arena and Giant Badger; and the twelve Astral cards. (Speaking of which, Aswan Jaguar seems to get highlit now, ooh ah, but the other eleven still don't.) It didn't include anything from Fallen Empires.

The only cards I've found that were implemented but "not turned on", as you say, are Chaos Orb, City in a Bottle, Cocoon, Golgothian Sylex, Metamorphosis, Power Artifact, Transmutation, and Wood Elemental, all of which are broken to varying extent. There's more cards, including plenty of gold ones, that had entries defined in cards1.dat, but that doesn't contain much more than card text, frame, power, toughness, and mana cost - only enough to display the card on the screen. That's not "implemented" by any reasonable measure.

Nothing I've done should make the game any more likely to run under Windows 7. It may just be a matter of me working from a different starting point. The shandalar.exe I distribute is (barely) modified from a "Microprose MTG Mok's Manalink 2.0 Version.rar" that had been on my hard drive for upwards of five years; I don't remember an exact link to where I got it.

Maybe it doesn't work because the Microprose Magic the Gathering 2010 Custom Installer ISO installs the game in C/program files (if you doesn't choose otherwise-if I remember correctly you can choose path)which causes problems in newer windows OS with administrator problems issues.

You're saying that Chaos Orb is implemented!? If this means what I think, how did they do it??
(And why would they implement Chaos Orb, but not Falling Star?

It has a 1 in 3 chance to destroy each permanent. (Each effect card too; so it might leave your Grizzly Bears alone, but negate the +3/+3 bonus it has from the Giant Growth you cast earlier that turn. As I said, the disabled cards are pretty broken.)

IIRC, the Unlimited cards were added in Spells of the Ancients and Legends in Duels of the Planewalkers (except the ones that made it into the original release because they were reprinted in Fourth Edition, or course), so they'd have already known Falling Star wasn't workable even as an approximation.

Alternately, this might have been another Astral card. All I can tell from the function is its activation cost and effect, not e.g. its color or card type or casting cost. Activation cost matches Chaos Orb's {1} {T}, and the effect's pretty reminiscent of it, including always destroying the card itself at the end rather than e.g. sacrificing it as a cost.

? It included cards from everything up to Ice Age, excluding Ice Age, and no Fallen Empires and Homelands (well, I forgot Homelands actually came before Ice Age, sorry) cards on purpose. Plus astral cards, I suppose.

It didn't include all the cards from those sets, but the question was "what card sets" and I thought it meant "were featured". And I also thought he meant in og Shandalar with expansions :(

So I suppose a more correct answer would be "sets up to The Dark + 4th + Astral cards + possibly a promo like that red banding dragon".
