Progression of the Game

Do any of you know how the game progresses? I have noticed that over time the attacks on towns happen more and more frequently. Is this simply brought about by the passage of time or is it linked to the players progress in the game? I could imagine it being linked to the number of world magics collected (because the lives of boss enemies is linked to this) or by the number of mana links collected.
