PostPosted: 12 Mar 2010, 03:26
by Huggybaby
QUICK START:

    1) Download the game via torrent (see attached) and install.
You're done! :D

While downloading the game, please read the detailed Instructions, multiplayer info and more, because it's important:
| Open
Microprose Magic the Gathering 2010 Custom Installer ISO (for Windows XP, Vista, 7, x32 and x64)
(Over 18,000 downloads and counting...Over 100 Seeders...Download in minutes...)

This thread is only for discussing the unmodified 2010 ISO Installer. This thread can't serve as a Shandalar troubleshooting forum.
1) If you have installed the game, and it is working, please post further questions to the Manalink New Users Forum.
2) If you have questions about modifying this game, please ask in the Manalink 2.0 forum.

TORRENT DOWNLOAD:
Get it from The Pirate Bay or from the attachment.

MULTIPLAYER FILES:
MTG 2010 Multiplayer.zip (2.1 KB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?jnmlywtrj2z -or-
http://rapidshare.com/files/373964431/M ... player.zip

THE ONE AND ONLY UPDATE FOR THE ISO:
There is only one update, but you have two choices:
1) The user-friendly patcher, MagicTG_2009_to_2011_Patch.exe (74.5 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/m8zvw64fb ... _Patch.exe
-or-
2) The manual CCGHQ Microprose DOTP Custom ISO Update 072111.zip (120.76 MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?c3rni3rwakn8i30

WARNING: The updated CardArtNew files are exclusive to this 2009/10 CD-ROM version of the game.
This one download is the only update available for the ISO. You will find all kinds of update files for this game elsewhere in this forum. You will be tempted to install them to see what happens. Before you do so, STOP. And REMEMBER: The one download above for the CardArtNew is the only update available for the ISO.
Do not install any update files from any other version of the game to this 2009/10 CD-ROM version.
Likewise, under no circumstances install these files to any other version of the game currently being developed at CCGHQ.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in the game becoming highly unstable or possibly failing to run, and will require a complete re-installation of the originally installed version of the game to rectify.

VERSION DEVELOPMENT:
This version of the game is supplied as a quick and simple-to-install version of the game for those who wish to relive the memories of the classic game.

The game as it stands still retains bugs – especially the Shandalar section (ASM programmers needed). Unfortunately, Shandalar never received the same development as the Duelling sections of the game, and has been removed from later versions. However, we are still open to bug reports on specific card issues in the Duelling sections, and will endeavor to correct them whenever possible. Please report bugs here.

OTHER VERSIONS:
Eventually you may want to try something newer. Other, more complex versions can be found in the Manalink 2.0 forum here at CCGHQ.
None of those other versions of the game are compatible with the ISO.
No other upgrade or update files except those found in this post are compatible with the ISO.
If you want to play Shandalar and also the new modified builds, you will need two separate installs to two separate directories.

RELEASE/INSTALL NOTES
Magic the Gathering 2009 Edition (Updated March 2010)
A custom installer for Sid Meier's classic
Magic: The Gathering, Duels of the Planeswalkers, Spells of the Ancients
Published by Microprose

Brought to you by Hip63 and the CCGHQ Team at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum

BEFORE:
Install Magic: The Gathering, Duels of the Planeswalkers.
Install Spells of the Ancients.
Try getting it to run with compatibility mode, which never reliably worked.
See your wizard move too fast in Shandalar. See missing cards in your deckbuilder.
See invisible text in game dialogues.
Spend hours and hours googling for solutions, and following dead links.
Finally, if you still had the time, motivation, knowledge and hard drive space,
give up and install a virtual machine, then Windows 95 or 98, then DOTP and SOTA all over again.
Be stuck with a limited selection of cards.

TODAY:
All those hassles have been obliterated with:
===========================================================
M A G I C : T H E G A T H E R I N G
" D U E L S O F T H E P L A N E S W A L K E R S "
- - - 2 0 0 9 E D I T I O N - - -
===========================================================

This is an updated installer for MAGIC: THE GATHERING
"Duels of the Planeswalkers/Spells of the Ancients".

It has been modified to install and play on new operating systems
such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It has been tested with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

It runs in a screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

This version includes Mok's Manalink 2.01 unofficial updates,
Smiling Spectre's Application Compatibility Fix to
correct graphics issues, and hundreds of new cards added by
the Magic The Gathering Community, released as of early March 2009!

The CD-Rom Features:
====================
A professional grade installer that allows the user full control of the installation.

A reworked Autorun Menu featuring an animated splash screen and original CD artwork and sounds.

A new Tutorial Viewer. (Sorry, it's not interactive anymore, but all the info is still there.)

All the original manuals as PDF files. These are available from the program menu and the Tutorial Viewer as well.

The Installer Features:
=======================
Installer presentation with slide show and music from the original installer.

All the original registry entries are created by the installer.

The full game is installed already patched with manalink 2.01 plus
all the latest community card packs.

A new Magic the Gathering Launcher Application that allows for starting the
Deck Builder, Magic or Shandalar, and Character Generator directly from the Launcher.
The Manuals can also be viewed from the Launcher.

However, the BIG feature of the new installer is the fact that it automatically installs
Smiling Spectre's ACT Fix WITHOUT having to use the Application Compatibility Toolkit.

And everything still fits on a single CD-Rom disc too!

INSTALLING:
========
There are at least three ways to install the game.

1) The ISO image can be burned to disc with any CD burning program.

2) You can mount the image in a virtual drive such as DAEMON TOOLS,
Slysoft.com's Virtual Clone Drive, MagicDisk from MagicISO.com, etc.

After inserting the CD or mounting the image, if the installer doesn't begin, or autorun fails, navigate to the CD and run Setup.exe from the Setup folder.

3) You can extract the ISO using WinRAR or 7-Zip, then run Setup.exe found in the Setup folder.

After that it is just a simple install process (that will look VERY familiar) ;)

* - Do NOT Install to a long folder path!
The Application Fix does not work with long folder paths!

EXAMPLES:
---------
C:\Program Files\MagicTG -GOOD!

C:\Program Files\Magic the Gathering -BAD! Will have issues

After installing, the Install window will pop up again.
You can install the tutorial viewer at this time.
If you don't want to do that, then close the window.

* - Your OS should be installed on your C drive.

*- If you are missing text in the game: reboot after installing.

If you are still missing text after a reboot, is your Windows installed on your C drive?
If your windows is installed to a drive other than C:, you will most likely have mising fonts in the game because the Application Compatibility Fix won't work.

If your Windows is on drive E for example, you should find the following file:

E:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\Custom\{a517a98e-d5c2-41ea-a12d-47365cbd8813}.sdb

Create a WINDOWS\AppPatch\Custom\ directory on your drive C and copy or move the sdb file there, like so:

C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\Custom\{a517a98e-d5c2-41ea-a12d-47365cbd8813}.sdb

Your fonts should now work.
(Thanks to Lex at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/view ... 59#p30859)

AFTER INSTALLING:

* - If your machine won't launch the Launcher or Shandalar modules, then include MTGlauncher.exe and Shandalar.exe as exceptions to Window 7's Data Execution Prevention(DEP). See CarlPH's instructions at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/view ... 824#p66824.

* - BE SURE TO UPDATE the CardArtNew images. See CardArtNew Instructions.txt.
The updated CardArtNew fixes problems that can cause the game to crash outside of Shandalar.

* - To play Multiplayer, see the instructions in the Multiplayer folder
included in this download.

PLAYING:
========
* - It is mandatory that you save your character's image before
playing, or you may not have a character at all!

* - Launch the game from the Magic TG Launcher shortcut on your desktop or
the shortcut in the Programs menu. The Launcher minimizes to the system tray,
and you can have more than one open at a time, so keep an eye on it.

* - Sometimes when starting or loading a game,
the display may not "fill the screen" and the game will run
in a window in the upper left corner of the screen. To fix
this, simply save, exit, then reload the game and it
should correct the issue.

* - To view the Tutorial, run C:\Program Files (x86)\MagicTG\Tutorial.exe or
see the shortcut in your Start/All Programs Menu.

* - If you did not install the manuals you can get them here:
Duels of the Planeswalkers HOTU Manuals.rar (15.23 MB)

Multiplayer Instructions by Salinnar:
You folks need to make sure that you download the registry entries for this game that put it into and out of multiplayer capable mode. These files are linked near the top of this post. Inside that archive are three .reg files.

1) First, for safekeeping you can put these 3 files into the MagicTG directory where you should have installed the game.
2) Second, double click/run the magic.reg file just to ensure that the entries were properly placed when you installed the game.
3) Third, choose which mode you want to run in by running either serial.reg (for single player mode) or no-serial.reg (for multiplayer mode).
For most this will conclude the steps you need to take towards a Masters degree in software engineering ;)
4) If you open the game at this point and DO NOT see the blue gem in the top right of your screen, you'll need to heed this fourth step. Go to your start menu and run regedit to open your registry. HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxx\Software\MicroProse\Magic: The Gathering. The Manalink key should have a value of ON not OFF. Just double-click on Manalink and edit the value to ON in the pop-up window. Close the registry (there is no save requirement when you're in the registry).
That's the end of the hard stuff.
Open the game.
5) Right click on the Manalink gem and choose Preferences -> Options.
6) Uncheck/Clear 'Use Autoconnect' and click APPLY.
7) Now just double-click the gem or right-click and choose OPEN.
8) What opens is the Manalink program. Choose TCP/IP regardless of whether you're playing on a home network (LAN) or over the internet and click the CONNECT button.
9) Choose to Host or Join.
10) If you choose Join and are playing a LAN game, leave the next pop-up window blank that requests for you to enter an IP address. The game will find another computer on the network running Manalink for you :)

I don't know anything about torrents. How do I get the ISO? All I see is a 195k file.

Use a torrent client (I use "mu"-torrent, download it from utorrent.com) and open that small 195kb torrent file with it. It should start downloading the whole app.

You need to know how to use torrents nowadays. :) With over 200 seeders it should be extremely fast.

The direct download of the ISO is here: http://www.filehosting.org/file/details ... cTG2009.7z

I'll upload the full package later. Probably much later.

This is a dream come true! I was up until 3am playing in Shandalar again, sure takes me back. I was a beta tester when manalink first was in development. So much fun playing again. Thanks a million.

Quick question, how do you save your game? It seems like there's an autosave but I forget how the manual save works.
