Sure would enjoy playing Shandalar once again!

Downloaded Shandalar2012delta.7z and installed in a "Games" folder off C:\. Got the compatibility Wizard, and tried both ways: installed correctly, and reinstall using "use recommended settings". Results same either way; will not run; I get a 'program has problems and must close' message. On the "installed correctly" option, I was getting a 'missing files' (cards.dat, BBinfo.dat, and rarity.dat) message. Just for laughs, I tried installing the 'missing DLL's" mentioned in the 'readme' file: no luck. FWIW, that missing files message has stopped appearing, but the 'must close' message still comes up.

Next I tried the Shandalar2012gamma.7z version: same results, though the missing files message did not appear.

I'm running Win 7 64bit, SP1.

Any help or suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Shandalar 2012 Install

I'm having a problem with every version of Shandalar I install. I am using a Windows XP 32-bit install on a Virtual Machine with 3GB of ram. Manalink 1.3.2, Shandalar 2010 iso and Shandalar 2012 all have a failure when I play. Whenever a wizard taps a village (because it's early in the game and they attacked a village all the way across the board,) the game locks up when it should go to the screen showing all of the wizards and their taps (or defeats). I have installed to a game neutral location (c:\games\magic) and have tried every trick I can find on these forums. Any help?

You have to remember this is an old 16-bit game - some of the file paths were hard coded. So you might get better results using the original game path.

C:\Program Files\Magic\

When I double-click the "InstallMe" file it tells me that "Windows cannot find 'ReadMe_Shandalar2012.txt'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." It also tells me the same thing about the "IntroToShandalar.avi" file. What can I do to make the InstallMe file find those other files?

Hey. I installed it and tried to play with; Windows 7 64bit machine. I installed it through the batch file and started the game through Play_Shandalar.cmd, but I keep getting error on "Magic:The Gathering Duel has stopped working". Apparently Shandalar.exe itself is crashing somehow, and I have no clue how. I installed the VB6.0 and Visual C++ to be sure (C++ wouldn't install though, apparently I've got a newer version already). Here's the data Windows was willing to provide me with:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Shandalar.exe
Application Version: 6.1.0.0
Application Timestamp: 3517e16d

I don't expect there's anything to be done about it but I figure it's still worth asking. Is there a way to run this through DosBox or something similar? Or do I need to setup a Virtual PC for it? That's just a bit much effort for my liking.

I very much want to play the Shandalar portion of the game but I cannot for the life of me make this work. I have followed the instructions for the ISO version as well as the Shandalar only version and it just will not load. I can get the deck construction portion to load by itself but I can't get the game itself to load. It just keeps shutting down.

Please help. This game really takes me back and I remember how much fun I used to have playing it.

Figured I’d keep a running tally of everything I did to make it easier for someone to help.

First I downloaded everything starting with the Microprose ISO installer and tried a bunch of stuff that I saw in other responses but none of that worked. Then I saw this post about just downloading Shandalar which the only part I wanna play anyway. Same thing, tried some fixes that I saw posted and couldn’t get it to work so I deleted it all and decided to start over. This is what I have done so far.
Downloaded Shandalar_2012delta from CirothUngol’s Sky drive (this is the only that would work)
I then had to unzip the file
It saved it as Documents>Shandalar 2012delta>Shandalar 2012
I ran the Install Me First file
I tried the Play_Shandalar in the Shandalar 2012 folder which was a Windows Command Processor. Double clicking only cause the C prompt screen to flash very briefly then nothing. I then tried to right click and Run as an Admin and got the error message “Windows cannont find Shandalar.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.”
I then went to the Programs folder and found the Shandalar application (which has a skull icon)and double clicked. I immediately get an error message that it has stopped working. Tried the same thing as an admin and got the same message. (In this same folder there is an applications marked Deck which I am able to open and manipulate. It is the deck building page with every card at the bottom for me to choose from)
I had already set the DEP setting earlier when I downloaded everything the first time and that is still correct according to the instructions I found.
I tried moving the Shandalar file to a couple different place and would get the message that DrawCardDLL.dll was missing. I tried moving that file to the same area as the Shandalar app and it would just ask for other files. I moved all of those with no results.
I’ve read through most of the postings on this thread and I can’t find a fix for my situation. The things that worked for others aren’t working for me.

It worked for me. Thanks a bunch! Did I miss this somewhere in the documentary?

EDIT: I see the AI is still buggy as hell tho. Constantly casting Giant Growth on my creatures and Howl from Beyond with damage on stack. I suppose there AI code isn't dissected to fix such stuff?

2012 Shan Install, no Instal Me First bat file

Postby Frogsmasher » 12 Oct 2013, 21:08

Hi guys, always loved the shandalar game. I tried downloading the 2012 version on page one but I've looked everywhere in the folder and couldn't find the Click Me First or Install Me First bat file from the instructions. Setting I'm missing or something I'm doing wrong?

Ok weird, I extracted the same file again to another folder and it was in there. I dunno.

Well I finally got it working but I had to install it on another computer to make it work. That one is little bit newer and runs Windows 8. I've already spent hours playing. Thanks you guys for this blast from the past. I think I like this better than playing MTGO.
