Magarena 1.8
by ubeefx » 13 Mar 2011, 17:05
Magarena 1.8 is available for download.
There are now two cubes to choose from when playing a new duel.
The default or ubeefx cube contains 530 cards, with several new cards from Mirrodin Besieged.
The singularita cube contains an additional 320 creature cards for a total of 850 cards.
Thanks to puxl (singularita on project) for this nice contribution
There is now also the option to play with monocolored decks.
To allow this, the deck generator was redesigned.
It should generally create better decks.
Have fun!

And there was I thinking development had stopped. Great surprise and thanks for releasing.

Sounds great. I haven't played any Magic in about 2 months and this looks like a spectacular release. I'm sure I'll burn hours head-to-head against the devious AI.

I just played a couple of long, drawn out games with lots of creatures using the new cube and deck generator, and wow, what a difference! Much more like real life games.
Once I got a lot of creatures out the computer really started taking a while to think. I noticed the java prcess was using 25% of my quad core---is there a way to make it use more of my resources?

This behavior is normal. The first choice option is always evaluated single threaded.
Then when there are other options those can be evaluated multi threaded. Those evaluations will also go faster.
What seems to be the threshold number of creatures when thinking becomes really slow?

Wow. Great release. Love the new deck generator. I am not seeing any slowdown at all yet with at least 8 creatures on the board.

I added the Mystic theme to the downloads page.
I would find it really cool if other users also create themes and share them on the forum.
It involves no programming and you can read about it on the customizing Magarena Wiki page.
To see examples, just unzip the existing themes.
It is possible to work on an unzipped theme by putting it into the mods folder in a folder with name ending on _theme.

Themes

Your themes are very nice. I was vaguely thinking about trying to update Forge's user interface but I knew that any one style people wouldn't like, so your idea of themes is very interesting. I might try to make a version of Forge that can use Magarena's themes because they look so nice and professional.
