Magarena 1.11

Magarena 1.11 is available for download. :D
There are some nice new features and the cubes now contain 555 and 876 cards.
This is also a special release. Magarena went gold.
While software is usually never really finished, I have most certainly achieved my goals.
I have received a lot of appreciation for this project, thank you!
Also check out this recent Magarena article.

The future of this project should now be experimenting with Magic AI.
I did create the Mad Wizard project for that purpose, but it was stopped due to time constraints.
Thanks to Melvin who started working on a Monte Carlo AI. The first version is playable in this release.

Best. Release. Yet.

Although the new changes are small, every little detail makes this program better and better. The new symbol icons look great, much better than the previous set, and better than the set I posted in the feature request thread. (Since I recently posted that feature request, I am going to assume that it was in the works before I ever thought of it!)

Wonderful work. Fantastic release.

Thanks ubeefx. I think we all agree that Magarena is worthy of gold status. :)

Thanks for the link to that article. I had to notice that for some reason the authors left out a few other contenders. Maybe they were unaware of this forum?

OK, I'm going to check out the new release now.

It is a great experience working on the MCTS AI. Kudos to ubeefx for creating an AI friendly game engine, that was what make it all possible. Hope folks can give the new AIs (monte carlo and vegas) a try and let us know if you find any bugs/quirks.

Hey Melvin,

I would love to hear more details about the monte-carlo AI. Do you just use monte carlo to decide with game subtrees to evaluate? What kind of criterion do you use?

I wanted to post the change log:

Release 1.11 (April 11, 2011)
============

- default cube (555 cards)
- all cube (876 cards)

- renamed the two standard cubes to default and all
- improved displaying of messages with scroll bar and toggle button + F1 shortcut to show or hide messages
- improved mana cost images (if already installed, delete symbols folder in Magarena data folder and load images)
- improved card definition files, they now also contain the image url and cube information
- improved scoring for unnecessary equiping
- three new AI implementations are available next to the default MiniMax AI : Monte Carlo, Vegas and Random
- the preferred AI can be selected in preferences, the deck strength calculator always uses MiniMax AI
- added New and Load Duel buttons on startup screen
- added option to a select random deck from decks folder in New Duel dialog (folder icon)

- fixed Lightning Helix, it can now target your own permanents with filter legal targets enabled
