Thanks for your encouragement, ubeefx: it is good to know about the flexibility of the setup. The issues which mattered to me are now all solved, I am very pleased that I can continue to run the game portably; that I can update to new versions; and that I can continue with existing campaigns across versions. Hopefully the thread will be useful to others too.
I can see the appeal of greater openness and modding; I hope it encourages others to try out and enjoy the game!

I can also recommend Github Desktop or TortoiseGit as easy to use tools to clone and pull the Mad Wizard git repository.
