We may want to add a few new leaders to the forge dev group
by Chris H. » 20 Dec 2012, 13:26
Our forge developers group current has four leaders.
mtgrares
Rob Cashwalker
DennisBergkamp
Chris H.
As I am the only person in this group that is still active I would like to suggest that one or more people be added to this leader group. Possible candidates would be:
Sol
Hellfish
Marc
Sloth
as these people have been with the project for a long time and are still active.

I vote for Sloth and Sol.

Agreed, Sloth and Sol are defacto leaders now anyway.Max mtg wrote:I vote for Sloth and Sol.

It appears that I should have provided some additional info in my first post. The leaders of our Developers - Forge group are the people who have the ability to add new people to the list of people who have commit privs.
The User Control Panel has a tab labeled Usergroups. This tab when pressed will list several groups including one named Developers - Forge. Clicking on Developers - Forge will load a page with the Group Leaders (those who can grant commit privs) listed at the top and the Group Members (those with commit privs) are listed below.
When someone selects to join the Developers - Forge group a pm is sent to the various Group Leaders. This pm will include a link where the Group Leaders can grant commit privs.
I could use a little help in this area.
There have been several times where someone requested commit privs and they were certified java developers. I do not have the knowledge base or the experience to communicate at a level which would lead them to getting involved in our project.
I have tried to ask the people who have requested to join the Developers - Forge group to post a public message introducing themselves and have had some success.
Occasionally, someone will request membership to our group without understanding that the group members are committing material to the project. I guess that some people like to join groups.
Nonetheless, I would like to see a person or two step forward to help in this area. We rarely receive a request to join and we only need to communicate by pm a time or two to get enough info to determine weather or not to give them commit privs.

I can handle that. Even if I don't get to code as much as I used to, I'm generally on the boards often enough.

I'd like to say that I'm completely for this idea, and I fully support the initial candidates, so whoever from them is (or are) able to take this job, I would fully agree with this decision!

I'm always willing to help out wherever I can, although I think the other three are better candidates than me because they know both java and the deeper workings of Forge far better than I do. So if you need me to be able to judge someone's proficiency in java, I may not be the right person; but if its on a lower level make sure they have a clue (and don't plan on sabotaging this program I love), then sign me up.

I think people who want to join do not have to be proficient in java, most parts of the code aren't very abstract and there are things to do other than coding.
Since the goals of forge are very clear (dictated by the card game) creative conflicts are almost nonexistent. So if someone hangs around in this forum for some time, makes some helpful comments, then requests commit rights publicly and noone objects he can join (imho).
So grant me thy power Chris, but don't forget to give it to sol, marc and Hellfish too, so they share this burden of power.

Ok, I put in a pm requesting that my choices be added to the list of group leaders.
The work involved is fairly minor and does not require a lot of time. It is nice to have more than one person who can give the commit privs. I do not feel comfortable "putting all of our eggs into one basket".
Most people get active on the forge topics and we get a chance to meet them publicly. They will submit material via messages and we get to communicate with them in the process.
Several times a year the leaders receive a pm from the CCGH system that a person has requested to join the forge group. On several occasions I did not recognize their nickname and searched CCGH for this person and noticed that they were new and have not yet posted any messages on CCGH.
Marc and I are friendly sort of people and we can contact these individuals in a friendly non-technical fashion and this can be helpful at times. Some of the system pms are from people who just want to join a group. Marc and I can can suggest that we can always use a few more testers and bug reporters.
Sol, Hellfish and Sloth have enough experience in the code portion of this project that they can address any concerns/questions that might be expressed by a competent coder that is interested in joining.

It looks like the change has already been made.

If you want another forum moderator, I'd like to volunteer. I've done that on a couple of other boards I've been on, and I'm on the board regularly.

Oh, I had a thought and figured I should point out a temptation that our leaders will face.
As a leader we also have the ability to remove someone's commit privs and I suggest that we refrain from making this decision on our own. If someone with commit privs causes far to much corruption to our SVN code base we will notice this and will likely discuss this problem amongst ourselves. If we remove someone's commit privs let us do this as a group.
The odds that we will have to at some point is fairly small but I think that we should be aware of the fact that we do have the ability to remove someone's commit privs.

Thank you for the offer.
1. Making topics sticky and non-sticky.
2. Deleting the occasional spam bot message.
3. Fixing other people's card names for mouse over.
4. We also gain the ability to edit other people messages on the forge forum. We can fix their broken quote tags, etc. We can also remove any words which can serve to inflame the user base.
5. We can also move messages from one forge topic to another. This helps to keep the bug reports and the feature requests in the proper topic. I have attempted to do this myself and have had mixed results. You may find that this is very easy for you while it tends to confuse myself.
