Manalink update May 2013 : Planeswalking to Modern

Postby Gargaroz » 18 May 2013, 13:28

Here we are, Manalink friends, with a new patch that completes the range of expansions that are allowed in Modern type tournements. So, you will find the best of Shards block and some stuff left out before from Worldwake, Rise of Eldrazi and M10.

Plus, Planechase was completely reworked :
- The use of the Planechase card is still the same : add one to your deck and one to your opponent's deck and you'll play a Planechase game with a shared Planar deck. But now Planes are full cards, not simply text to read, and I included almost all the available Planes, even the ones from Planechase 2012.
- You could add the single Planes to your deck and use their power agains the opponent. However, you won't be able to planeswalk from them, so choose carefully.

Finally, I'm restructuring Challenge Mode. For now, I added some cosmetic improvements (you will be able to know how many Challenges you still need to unlock) and modified something :
- in the "Gimme!" challenge AI will copy \ steal one of your permanents. Deck creation is no more restricted to only stealing / copying cards.
- in the "Banned" challenge, you won't be able to play one or more of your cards, you'll see what is via a legacy card.
- New Challenge, "Back to '95". Win this gauntlet using a deck made of cards released before 1996 (Alpha-Beta-Unlimited / Arabian Nights / Antiquities / Legends / The Dark / Homelands) and get some help in Challenge Mode.

Before leaving the usual space to the artwork section, I've to express my deepest thanx to Sonic, for the usual data insertion, Stassy, for updating the AI base values, Foolosopher, for the work on Limited, and to all the Bug Hunters and people from our Forum that keep helping and supporting me and this amazing project.

Oooh, so many new cards to try out!

EDIT: Question about this:
- New Challenge, "Back to '95". Win this gauntlet using a deck made of cards released before 1996 (Alpha-Beta-Unlimited / Arabian Nights / Antiquities / Legends / The Dark / Homelands) and get some help in Challenge Mode.
Does that also include Ice Age and Fallen Empires? Both of them were before 1996 (and came before Homelands), but you didn't list them, so I wanted to check.

Stassy, not all the planes cards are activated - you need to amend the list removing:

Glimmervoid Basin
Murasa
The Dark Barony
Akoum
Astral Arena
Glen Elendra
Trail of the Mage-Rings

Ah right, doing that right away :P

Anyway the new Planeswalk mode is much better than the previous, you no longer need the gatherer aside to look for the cast description :D

The only feature still missing is maybe being able to choose your planes deck planeswalkable (hard to make a good deck when sometimes you get a random plane not optimized for it)

Update to my previous post: It seems that the Back to 95 challenge doesn't allow Ice Age or Fallen Empires. Is this deliberate?

ozks> Unfortunately it seems to be that we need the high quality art files in order to finish coding the cards, and as it's not done yet it's postponed for next patch.

Well, you don't need to use only cards from those expansions; you can throw them into another deck using earlier cards, too. In particular, Necropotence, Hymn to Tourach, Orcish Lumberjack, Incinerate, Lava Burst, Demonic Consultation, Zuran Orb, and Brainstorm are all very useful to one deck or another from the era, though there are several others, too. (Orcish Lumberjack and Zuran Orb are extremely helpful in Erhnamgeddon, in particular -- I was making an Erhnamgeddon deck when I discovered they weren't allowed.)

Also, it seems like Homelands isn't supported, either; the game failed me immediately when I tried to use a Merchant Scroll and a Memory Lapse. Yes, I know it's not a huge loss, (nooo, my Joven's Ferrets deck can't be used for this challenge!), but I thought I'd point it out.

@ Ozks : Dragon's Maze will be in the next update, just be patient ;)
As for the new challenge, cards from Homelands are scattered across the first 2000 slots, I tried to add them all to the ones available for the challenge, but feel free to report the ones that generate an error.

kk! What about Fallen Empires and Ice Age? Are they left out deliberately, or should I check to see which cards from those are / aren't accepted, too?

Anyway, I've tested all the Homelands cards, and made a bug report listing the disallowed ones here.
