I disagree with this whole idea of changing the black borders, even if it's true to life. I would never notice on a real card, and it adds annoyances to dealing with images in programs that have to know the difference between border colors.
I don't find the WoTC gray bordered card pics very realistic looking at all anyway, and I don't think it was done to mirror a real-life card change either.

See the 2015 2013 Torrent Topic.
The 200 DPI images always have a pure border, out of tradition stemming back to Magic Workstation. Extreme had about a dozen borders for all the sets, which have been applied to the 300 DPI images over the years. He said there were actually more variants, but that he would settle for a very close match on older sets.
Regarding the current issue: compare the color of the card frames in the copyright area of the following M14 and M15 planeswalkers.

Notice that the M14 Jace has a black border and a gray copyright area. This indicates that pre-15 borders on gatherer images are fabricated and inaccurate. The gray area is probably what was used in printing. Notice that it is very close to the M15 color. Maybe it's 2-3% lighter. I'm not sure if that warrants a new frame.

Hmm. Perhaps you're right. Those do look fabricated. It seemed significantly lighter to me when I saw them, but I can't do a proper comparison without the physical cards in front of me, and at the moment all the physical cards I own are from 2011 or earlier. I've got some friends who will be coming by with their cards (at the end of the month) and I will do make sure to toss a couple of their cards and a couple of my cards into my scanner while they're here for a side by side comparison in identical lighting conditions etc.
I'd pick up some of the new cards to compare before then, but I'm currently between jobs; and magic cards are a bit too frivolous an expense at the moment.
[Edit]Upon a search, there don't seem to be any torrents newer than 2013.
