i have been using Xmage for a while but suddenly it just stoped working. so i decided to redownload it from the launcher. After doing this i kept haveing the same problem so i restarted my pc, and now i get this error when i try to open the launcher

"Windows can't open this file:
File: XMageLauncher-0.3.8.jar
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to open it. Windows can go online to look it up automaticlly, or you can manually select from a list of programs from a list of programs that are installed on your computer.

What do you want to do?
Use the web service to find the correct program
Select a program from a list of installed programs


If i use the web it opens google chrome and goes nowhere. if anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated

i have been using Xmage for a while but suddenly it just stoped working.

Right-click the launcher, select "Open with..." and then choose Java. To be more specific, you want your launcher to be opened with javaw.exe. If you can't find Java then you might have accidentally uninstalled it. You can go to this page to check if you have the latest version of Java installed:

That didnt work and I reinstalled java and it still didnt work so I just reset my pc. I needed to reset it anyways. But thank you for atleast trying to help

That thing is reoccurring now. just came back after the last update perhaps the AER update.

Where every few mins the screen will start tearing and when you move your mouse around the screen glitches and kind of moves around with it.

last time this happened they update the java version or something.

I recently updated my java but I cannot see if it changed it, I had updated well before this started again.

All times when i try to download it, it writes this log, and all time i see "A new version of Xmage is avalaible". Also i tried to download 1.4.2 version as ZIP, and when i clicked startClientWin7.bat it writes to me A Java Exeption has Occured, but i already downloaded Java from launcher to the folder where launcher exists. Whats solution?

This is the error I get when trying to install on Ubuntu 16.04

Please ignore, the problem was that openJDK doesn't play nice with the Jar file. Using the default JRE seems to have done the trick.

Tonight I encounter game freezing and/or (dis)connexion issues (5 or 6 in a row).
I noticed there is always that err message :

can you help me to find the origin of the problem ?

1) Go into your Start Menu and type regedit into the search field.
2) Navigate to path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft
(Windows 10 seems to now have this here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432Node\JavaSoft)
3) Right click on the JavaSoft folder and click on New -> Key
4) Name the new Key "Prefs" and everything should work.

Alternatively, save and execute a *.reg file with the following content:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs]

im trying to install the newest version (fresh install) and the launcher fails to download from the bitly site. i get a 404 when i try to visit the site. please help?

I get the error "Unable to connect to server. Server is likely offline." This happened after some update some time ago and I never got it to work. I have no idea what to do. I get this error on my laptop (which is windows 10). Xmage works fine on my desktop (windows 7). Please someone, I really want to play Xmage while at school haha. I have screenshots of all the errors and log from the client console. Here's what I have tried.

- Wifi (Tried on school and home network but doesn't work on either)
- Have tried reinstalling and didn't work.
- Disabled firewall and Xmage still did not work.
- Java is up to date.

If I need to post this somewhwere else (like the Github) to get more responses or something...please let me know!

I tried following the link in the logs for manual download, turns out the link is 404 now, most likely due to JRE update. I tried manually installing the newer version, but xmage does not recognize it and deletes it prior to attempting to install JRE by itself. I guess we have to wait for launcher update now, since the exact version of JRE xmage wants is not obtainable?

I am having this same issue. Has anyone managed a workaround. I tried manually installing the specific version of java and editing the installed.properties but with no succes.

Try also completely avoiding using the launcher altogether. The simplest method is to try just running off of the startMage batch or command file found in your XMage directory. If that alone does not work, follow the steps here:

I updated the launcher JRE download link. So you can try again to download java using the launcher.
