Booster Boxes, Booster Packs, Starter Decks, etc SCANS?
by zackary13 » 27 Jun 2017, 05:56
I have been looking around and haven't been able to find decent scans of rule books, booster packs, booster boxes, starter decks, fat packs, etc.
Does anyone know where I can find some HQ or better images of them or can someone post them? It doesn't matter if they are flattened boxes or the sides of each side of a box.
I am mainly looking for rule book scans (the ones in the starter decks) for collection purposes, but decided that I might as well ask for everything else too, to see if they can be acquired.
I appreciate the help, thanks.

I have an odd assortment of older documents - starter rules books, etc. No guarantees on when/how often I can scan things... but I'll try to put together a list of what I have, then go from there.
Started in Revised, for reference.

Sadly no. The plan is to scan the larger boosters and starters on my old Windows XP machine, with the ancient flatbed scanner, and scan the rule books using the larger scanner/printer at my work.
Speaking of rulebooks - voila!
Left to right- Urza's Saga, tournament play insert, Mirage (Spanish), Tempest storybook!, Mirage, Ice Age, Fifth Ed, Fourth Ed and Revised.

More miscellany- tournament pad (might be common, not sure). I just found it handy to keep track of my matches.
And the Pocket Player's guide from 1994... a simpler time. One interesting bit - Richard discusses where they got some of the early playtest art from (4th image), which always interested me. Along the same lines, I know Mark Rosewater has made posts from time to time, with old playtest cards he finds lurking in odd drawers at Wizards HQ... but never with the explanation of WHY that art was chosen. I'm glad Richard took the time to document it, in some form!
And the quick sketches from Christopher Rush are fun too.

<smh> ... you are correct, it absolutely is Italian and not Spanish. Not sure how much sleep I had when I posted that. Thank you!JohnnyTH wrote:That is italianrotarydials wrote:Close-up of the Spanish Mirage rulebook-DSCF6010 (Large).JPG

Presenting... Magic the Gathering Revised Edition rulebook (finally!)

Magic Esoterica scans > Booster Boxes, Booster Packs, Starter Decks, etc SCANS > _Rulebooks > Revised (bit.ly link in my signature to Mega repo)
My apologies to zackary13 - he's probably long gone from boredom at this point, but maybe not!
Some notes on scanning, since is the first rulebook I've finished out to individual pages-
For the non-rulebook scans, I'm just going to move forward with posting what I have cropped & straightened. Also scanned with a green background, but less to crop / not paging through the images like a book.
For the rulebooks though, I would like the forum's opinion -
After reviewing the Revised rulebook, if the general consensus is #1, I'll push to get the rest of them done in the coming weeks. Otherwise, I'll post the raw scans or go back and scan them.
Apologies that this took so long... one year from commit date...
Side note- full acknowledgement that I shamelessly copied charlequin's announcement post style... it works!

My apologies to zackary13 - he's probably long gone from boredom at this point, but maybe not!
Some notes on scanning, since is the first rulebook I've finished out to individual pages-
- Pages were scanned on an office printer/scanner. Canon ImageRUNNER Advance 4545i or something similar.
- Green construction paper used as a background during scanning, to be easily able to batch crop & straighten the full page sheets. I did not have a black backdrop available at the time.
- In photoshop, green was swapped out for gray to minimize green tinted edges (in case crop & straighten wasn't quite right). However, green is still slightly visible in the staple holes on the individual pages.
- Individual pages were created out of the full page sheets by creating a fixed selection size for half the full sheet, aligned from one edge to the staple holes. This worked out well enough... but not great. If you cycle through the images, the text jumps around, isn't aligned, etc. It might bug somebody. However, the rulebooks were cheaply printed... its not like they were cut straight to begin with!
For the non-rulebook scans, I'm just going to move forward with posting what I have cropped & straightened. Also scanned with a green background, but less to crop / not paging through the images like a book.
For the rulebooks though, I would like the forum's opinion -
- Keep doing what I'm doing even though the finished product might be a bit wonky (because I want to finish what I committed to).
- Provide the raw plattern scans on the Mega link and let more competent post-processing-people make something more polished.
- Start over and rescan the rulebooks with a black background, which I now have.
After reviewing the Revised rulebook, if the general consensus is #1, I'll push to get the rest of them done in the coming weeks. Otherwise, I'll post the raw scans or go back and scan them.

Rotary, this is a great initiative! How can I contribute my Italian FWB Rulebook scans? I'll follow your scanning procedure, let me know how to provide you the raw scans; then when we reach an agreement on the processing I'll happily do that as well.

Scanning the full plattern- 600dpi against a black background. That's about all the detail I'm working with at the moment. Black background can be "construction paper" (quotes bcause that's the phrase I know it by. Might be a colloquialism).
If you have a Mega/Mediafire/Dropbox account to share the raw scans, we can PM the link or something.
However, without hearing more from the forum, I'm hesitant to proceed with provding the final images. There may be others already doing this work, scanning rule books boxes, etc.? Note- I'm not an admin. Just made the Mega account to share the J P G S, for posterity. props to dragsamou and kudit, skibulk, chalrequin and Bog Wraith. Their initiative is a credit to humanity.

I'm going to move forward (slowly) processing the other images into full image sets, and will post announcements as they are completed.
Reason- because I want this project finished, it's annoying me sitting on my desktop.
However, if someone posts an opinion one way or another, I still have all the raw scans to work from.
