I didn't play Balance either, but for me there was a reason. I play so many token creatures that most of the time Balance would hurt me and not the opponent and surely I wouldn't trust the AI to make the right choice about timing. The other thing is my deck wants a lot of lands in play and can keep using all that mana.aww1979 wrote:Yeah, jatill and salbei definitely had the same idea :p The one argument I would make against Tinker is the AI doesn't use it smartly; I had one game the AI played jatill's deck and Tinkered for a *mox* instead of Inkwell. And jatill, shame on you for not using Balance, the best white card ever printed!
-Strip Mine: it goes in 99.9% of decks I make. The only card I put in more decks is Black Lotus.
-Library of Alexandria: A good card, and might've worked in salbei's deck, but he doesn't have a lot of card draw, so it's only really good if he got it right away.
-Thawing Glaciers: I don't like this card. It requires you to play many icky basic lands, which are icky slimy things. Plus, it starts out very slow.
I also tested an Enlightened Tutor / Land Tax / Zuran Orb engine. The problem was the AI would never cast Enlightened Tutor though so I had to pitch that idea.
If I had thought about Thawing Glaciers or Library of Alexandria they would have gone in my deck. I would still mostly be immune to Blood Moon and the benefits from those lands are pretty sweet. Good calls.
I think it's pretty funny that the mono-white deck in this tournament is one of the strongest at drawing cards. The fact that Library gets used by the computer (Skullclamp doesn't get used) is an important difference though.

Played with JuzamJedi's deck:
1) brandon 2-0
2) thedrigo 2-0
3) nyktorion 2-0 (I'd been against scherbchen, but the game crashed when AI used Emeria on Knight of the White Orchid. AI was in good shape to win, too, but I did have lots of life and could have recovered)
4) salbei 2-0 (part 1 video ends here)
Match 1 Game 1: Hand is a bit iffy, only two land and several high cc cards but by now you know I hate mulliganing, so I keep it. Early weenies get burninated, AI gets Smoke, but I never had more than one creature tapped at once, so it's irrelevant. I draw Sol Ring, and I can start casting the expensive cards in hand now
Win quickly follows.
Game 2: Keep a hand with 5x plains, finks, clamp. I brag on video about how I will teach you 'the power of Skullclamp !!!' but all I end up doing is charging with a 4/1 finks through Smoke. Turn 5 Baneslayer instantly eats 2 bolts and dies. I'm surprised the AI didn't kill finks earlier with those, but clamp+persist would have made that a poor choice, anyway. AI destroys my clamp, so I only attack for 3 (AI at 1, all from finks) and next turn I attack for the win. AI Chars finks, but dies from Char anyway, so either way it loses. 2-0
Match 2 Game 1: I get an incredible hand with 3 plains, Sol Ring, FoD, BA, Spectral Procession, and then I topdeck Mox Pearl! I could play turn 1 BA, but potential removal scares me into playing Procession first. One gets plowed, validating the concern, and I play BA next turn, but Oblivion Ring takes him out. The two 1/1 Spirits poke for awhile, flying over Wall of Blossoms. I get another BA, and a third, and it's over. 1-0
Game 2: Get a decent hand. 2 Plains, mox, Path, worship, BA, FoD. FoD is 4/4 on turn 2 and starts rocking the place, getting AI to 10 before eating a plowshares. Lots more weenies follow, and AI manages some removal and a Knight of Meadowgrain, but the outcome is never in doubt. 2-0
Match 3a Game 1a (scherbchen): Get a hand with 4 plains, sol ring, path, BA. AI plays turn 1 finks off lotus, but no land until turn 2. We trade finks twice (questionable on my part) and BA starts pounding. BA takes a path, but life totals are 37-8, so I'm not too worried. AI plays BA, and I path it. Emeria, the Sky Ruin comes down, and salbei and I start eating crow as seven plains are down! Emeria returns Finks, and I Wrath two finks and a Knight of the White Orchard. (finks persist, but are now only 2/1) Emeria tries to return the Knight, but the game crashes. I still had 32 life and lots of mana, but no hand, so I was in trouble but not doomed.
Match 3 Game 1: Opening hand is average. I trade a 3/2 finks for a qasali instead of using my removal, thinking to keep removal back for tarmos or Rhox War Monk. I get Spectral Procession and start beating. I exile Tarmogoyf and get baneslayer out when I get my 5th land. AI plays Fact or Fiction and takes the crappier pile (2 mox 1 land) instead of (land + Qasali) when it already has enough mana to cast any spell in the deck. It doesn't matter, though, as I get BA #2 and pwn next turn. 1-0
Game 2: Get an awesome hand with land, sol ring, BA and procession, as well as a Wrath. Two tokens get exiled, and I wrath a Noble Hierarch and Tarmogoyf. AI plays Tarmo #2 and Force of Wills my baneslayer, but it cost him a war monk to do it. AI plays a Sower of Temptation when I have no creatures, and I wrath Sower and Tarmo. A bug buries AIs tropical island when I wrath, so I kindly debug it back into play for him. Both sides are in topdeck mode, and I get Skullclamp and Spectral Procession. Procession is sadly countered, though, but I topdeck another one! The power of Skullclamp on three 1/1 tokens results in complete wtfpwnage. 2-0
Match 4 Game 1: My opening hand is 2 plains, finks, elspeth, BA, path, worship. I'm thinking Worship is game if I can get the mana for it, so despite the lack of quick plays, I keep it. AI has a poor start, with Island turn 1 and Mox Ruby turn 2, and I'm thinking 'this will be quick'. Boy, was I wrong! I get my third plains, and elect to pump FoD to 4/4 instead of playing finks or procession. (which turns out to be correct later on) AI gets Flooded Strand for Tundra and plows FoD. I put Spectral Procession down, and AI casts Balance. (damn!) I lose 3 spirits, a plains, and discard a baneslayer, since I'm at 2 plains in play now. Both sides do nothing for a few turns, as we can't get any mana and AI doesn't seem to have any of its walls (it could cast them if it did) I start discarding (8 cards in hand) and I'm thinking I really don't want to lose to salbei's deck when it had only one Island in opening hand. AI then gets Mox, hardcast Mulldrifter, plains, black lotus, sac to evoke a second mulldrifter, all on one turn! I plow the hardcast one, but am really not liking that card advantage at all, and I am STILL stuck at two plains, versus six mana for AI. I finally get that 3rd plains, and play Finks. AI casts Control Magic, and RESPONDS TO THAT WITH PLOWSHARES!!! Wall of Reverence comes down for AI, and a second Finks for me, which gets controlled also. I could Path it, but I keep the path in hand for baneslayers, and with my 31 life, I'm not worried about Finks yet, though they are comboing with Wall of Reverence. AI attacks and plays BA, which I Path of course. I draw Sol Ring, and suddenly I'm able to cast anything in my hand. Worship comes down (I should've put elspeth first and made a soldier, but w/e) and then Elspeth. (I keep my two BA in hand, fearing removal/control) AI plays two Wall of Denial at once, making me think it's been keeping those in hand, and my BAs are *definitely* not worth committing now; the risk is high that they will be killed/controlled, and they can't attack past walls anyway. So Elspeth starts making babies, which just chump Finks when he attacks Elspeth. By this point it's totally obvious this game will take forever. My library is larger (due to mulldrifters) so I know I'll win if I can survive that long; I'm also really hoping for Wrath of God. AI steals my Soldier with Control Magic. (lol, I have two BA in hand!) Seeing as AI has played three control magics so far, and I have just drawn a plowshares, I commit a Baneslayer. AI plays Tawnos's Coffin, but foolishly doesn't use it until postcombat. (had AI not wasted that control magic+plow on one Finks, I'd be in deep crap right now, but Worship would probably still have me clinging to life) I play BA#2 and a procession, then a replacement Elspeth for the one I lost earlier, and plow Wall of Reverence, and start attacking. Wall of Denial x2 block BA x2, and my spirit token gets Pathed (wtf?) while Coffin sits unused! My next attack sees Walls block BAs, while spirits get through; Coffin starts killing tokens (oh noes!). I get another procession out, and next turn draw Figure of Destiny, who with all the mana I have realizes his destiny to be an 8/8 wall of denial-hater the turn after I play him. It takes some time, but eventually the win comes. 1-0
Looking back, I think that even had a human been playing instead of the AI, I'd have won, but only because of Worship; I'd probably have had to run a human salbei out of cards, or at least needed to attack a lot more than I did. The AI had a full hand it wasn't playing, which a human would have, but no card in the deck can answer Worship, other than to kill all my creatures.
Match 4 Game 2: I'm really hoping this game will be quicker :p My opening hand has 2 plains, 2 spectral procession, FoD, Ranger of Eos, and I'm thinking this is great, because procession in particular will be a good card in this matchup. FoD gets toasted after doing 2 damage. Procession comes down, and one spirit is stolen, trading with another spirit. Ranger of Eos gets me two more FoDs and then eats a Path. Finks and another Procession come down; AI plays Coffin but can't activate it yet. I attack (AI down to 9) and play one FoD and pump it, keeping the other two and the finks in hand, remembering that Balance from last game. Coffin takes out FoD, and I swing for 7 (AI down to 2) AI evokes mulldrifter, but gets nothing, and I attack for the win. AI doesn't coffin my FoD, but I didn't need it that turn anyway.

Okay the stupid forum just deleted my summary when I clicked submit, so watch the video for the games, I'm not writing those summaries again :p
5) brandon 2-0
6) brandon 2-0
7) aww1979 2-0
scherbchen 2-0 (was playing thedrigo here but Path to Exile on Reveillark crashed the game; it would've been a 2-0 win the next turn)
9) salbei 2-0
10) cognis 2-0
A perfect 10-0 gauntlet and all 2-0 matches for juzamjedi.
Tactically, the most interesting games were the salbei matchups, because they required careful planning to get around potential threats like control magics in hand, whereas most of the other games were just 'plop everything down and attack with baneslayers for the win'. However, the salbei matches also took much longer to play out, and it was annoying when I had Worship out and knew I'd won, only to have to play another dozen turns!

Ok here are the final results for my gauntlet. I actually played with my deck after Yggdrasil Vampire but my review is shorter so I put it first. Although, because of the loss in the last match Enigma73 Tarmogeddon grabbed crucial 5 points that elevated him to third place
Cognis, BR Aggro went 0-1
Match 1 vs Enigma73 Tarmogeddon 1-2.
Game 1: I put the AI at 4 but Armageddon with a Terravore in play finished me of in one swipe.
Game 2: 2 Goblin Piledriver and Lightning Bolt on Tarmogoyf were enough for the win.
Game 3: I am 1 life looking at defeat and I topdeck Damnation. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to cast the damn thing sine I didn’t have a second B mana. Again I can’t seem to make it pass the first round with my own deck but at least someone made it 10-0 with my deck again.
Yggdrasil, Vampire went 10-0
Match 1 vs Brandon Redforce 2-0.
Demigod of Revenge was the decider in both matches.
Match 2 vs Thedrigo WWeenie 2-1.
Game 1: Oblivion Ring took Demogod of Revenge and Vampire Nocturnus but I’m able to keep the field clear with 2 Urge to Feed until Paladin en-Vec enters, AI is a 9 life and I’m at 25 life and have 2 Urge to Feed in hand and keep getting Swamp. I’m at 11 life and play kicked Gatekeeper of Malakir and the AI sacrifices Paladin en-Vec instead of Wall of Blossoms; a dumb move. AI was at 5 when it played Worship and Figure of Destiny but I play Drain Life on it. AI played Knight of Meadowgrain and I just kept drawing Swamp and lost. I was pretty mana flooded and it was hard to keep fighting back sine out of 29 cards I drew during this game, 14 were lands compared to 8 to 29 by the AI which made the difference.
Game 2: Vampire Nocturnus made a vampire army fly to victory.
Game 3: Turn 3 Marit Lage was enough for a win.
Match 3 vs Salbei Stall 2-0.
Game 1: I lure the AI into removal with few smaller vampires then kick Gatekeeper of Malakir for Wall of Denial. The AI steals my vampire and plays Baneslayer Angel so I have to Urge to Feed my AI’s stolen creature so I can kick Gatekeeper of Malakir for the angel. AI plays Balance and takes out my 4 vampires. I play Drain life to put him at 9 so Bloodghast would have haste when I play a land. AI plays Wall of Reverence but I kick another Gatekeeper of Malakir. AI plays Baneslayer Angel and I play Nights Whisper and get Mox Jet and Gatekeeper of Malakir which enters and kills the angel. After that 2 Demogod of Revenge flew to victory.
Game 2: After some time were both at 11 life when I play Demigod of Revenge and up the tempo for the win.
Match 4 vs Enigma73 Tarmogeddon 2-0,
Game 1: AI plays Armageddon with Terravore in play so I have to sac Black Lotus for Urge to Feed and the Demigod of Revenge that was in play went for the win 4 times.
Game 2: I was pressed by 3 Black Vise and a little mana screwed but thankfully the AI didn’t have Armageddon so Vampire Nocturnus and Demigod of Revenge finished the job.
Match 5 vs Mirror match 2-0.
Game 1: Had more creatures and Vampire Nocturnus made them fly.
Game 2: Play Dark Depths to bury AI’s Dark Depths, Gatekeeper of Malakir when it mattered and generally ran over the AI.
Match 6 vs Cognis BR Aggro 2-0.
Game 1: Had to mulligan to 5 so I could have some lands. AI had 2 Goblin Sharpshooter on the field but didn’t know how to use them.
Game 2: AI was mana screwed and I played Drain Life three times.
Match 7 vs Thedrigo WWeenie 2-0.
Game 1: Lots of vampires and Demogod of Revenge for a quick win.
Game 2: Marit Lage.
Match 8 vs Schreben TinyAngryMen 2-0.
Game 1: Turn 1 Demigod of Revenge was enough for the win although the AI left me at 2 life. If it dealt 2 damage from Fiery Justice to me instead of Demigod of Revensge it would have killer me with 2 Kavu Predator and Tarmogoyf.
Game 2: Turn 2 Marit Lage was enough for the win.
Match 9 vs Kakodrilo Burn 2-0.
Game 1: Was a little bit mana flooded but had plenty of removal and Kalastria Highborn with a massive Drain Life were enough for the win.
Game 2: Turn 1 Vampire Nocturnus killed by Lightning Bolt and Mogg Fanatic and second removed by Fireblast but I was still much quicker.
Match 10 vs Mirror match 2-0.
Game 1: I mulligan to 5 cards and decide to keep Swamp, Dark Ritual, Night’s Whisper, Demigod of Revenge and Bloodghast. I play Night’s Whisper and draw Kalastria Highborn and thankfully another land but the AI has a slow start as well and I’m able to exploit that for the win.
Game 2: Turn 2 Marit Lage was just too much.
I really enjoyed this deck and although it’s tied with Salbei Stall I preferred Vampire. The deck is quick and efficient, although I would try to find a place for Vampire Nighthawk for its ability to take care of Wall of Denial, Wall of Reverence and with the help of Urborg even Baneslayer Angel, but even without it this deck rules.
My favourite deck of the tournament was definitely Shantak Tramp which had a nice idea and was very fun to play. The most pain in the ass deck was definitely Salbei Stall. The deck is great and made for winning but seriously, it took me like a day and a half to finish the gauntlet, I don’t think all other matches with the decks that went 10-0 lasted as long as playing with Stall. As I said it’s a great deck, just boring to play. I would put Vampire in front of Stall although they have the same number of points only because Vampire took out Zookiller which was a big favourite for the overall win but that and a small number of matches played put it out of the competition, so I would give the advantage to Vampire since it took out a direct opponent for the win.

@cognis: found an error in my recording, unfortunately to your disadvantage :p (I had recorded you as having gone 9-1 with your own deck instead of that shantak did :p) However, I found the post and corrected my notes, and now my numbers agree with yours.

Did a 5 round, best of three gauntlet with the vampires, otherwise I won't have time to test the other decks.
Yggdrasil Vampire vs:
Aww1979 BR Discard: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
Turn two Nocturnus stayed active till AI was dead.
Round two 2/0
Turn one Nocturnus followed by Hexmage and Highborn.
Salbei Stall: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
It stalled, indeed, but in the end three demigods can still beat one wall of denial and one wall of reverence.
Round two 2/0
Turn three Marit Lage, no removal, I won.
Brandon Redforce: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
AI kept bolting the hexmages and gatekeepers I played and getting syphoned by the Highborn in play.
Round two 2/0
After a long removal baitgame AI gave me the match fueling two huge life drains with it's mana flare.
Cognis BR Aggro: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
AI never got past two lands.
Round two 2/0
One demigod got damnated, then I played the other one I had in hand and went for the kill.
Enigma73 Tarmogeddon: 2/1 WIN
Round one 0/1
Three goyfs are just unfair.
Round two 1/1
Nocturnus flew over their heads for the win.
Round three 2/1
Turn one Marit Lage.
10-1 Tarmogeddon gets +5
Stroggoii Swift vs:
Kakodrilo Burn: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
Fireblast and Countryside Crusher hurt the AI a lot as it was left with a mox ruby during the whole game, also, had one firewalker and AI never attacked with the giant that got to 15/15, anyways, bolts and Legoinnaires killed him.
Round two 2/0
So, I have six mountains, am at 22 life and have 2 firewalkers, AI's at 5 life with a crusher and four mountains, and still, it throws Chain Lightning at me, I fork it back, and IT FORKS IT BACK! I just had to kill it right there.
Cognis BR Aggro: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
Lol, Goblin King got easily abused.
Round two 2/0
Had two firewalkers in my opening hand, never went below 20 life.
Enigma73 Tarmogeddon: 2/1 WIN
Round one 1/0
Managed to keep chumpblocking and lifegaining till my Legionnaire killed the AI.
Round two 1/1
Damn round lasted about 35 minutes. First I got balanced into 0 cards in hand, no creatures and two lands after bringing a creatureless AI to 10, then we had about 19 turns of dragging, turtling removal war and the the asshole plays armageddon followed by Knight of the Reliquary.
Round three 2/1
Didn't really feel like playing anymore so I mulliganed into a hand with two Legoinnaires, a mox, a plains and a plateau and raced it to death, AI played a terravore and armageddoned but I pathed his 7/7 next turn and kept hitting. AI didin't come back from the armageddon this time.
Jatill Zookiller: 2/1 WIN
Round one 1/0
AI commited suicide by fetchland answering with a fetch to a lightning helix while at 4 life.
Round two 1/1
I managed to path the angel, get some damage in, then the sphinx owned me.
Round three 2/1
Raced the AI to 2 life with a Legionnaire and a couple goblins, then felt owned when the AI played a path but it hit a goblin instead of my legionnaire and lost.
(again) Kakodrilo Burn: 2/0 WIN
Round one 1/0
Pro-red Firewalker, do you have it? There's notthing this deck can do against him.
Round two 2/0
Mulliganed for a Firewalker and beat AI easily with him plus two more I drew turn 3 and turn 5.
10-2 Tarmogeddon and Zookiller get +5 each.
Yggdrasil Vampire vs:
Aww1979 BR Discard: 2/0 WIN

Thank you for your kind comments.Cognis wrote:I really enjoyed this deck and although it’s tied with Salbei Stall I preferred Vampire. Choosing to not include Nighthawk was a tough decision. Let's say for 3 mana, I prefer a kicked Gatekeeper of Malakir. Moreover, Vampire Nighthawk is rather a defensive card and one of my goals was to create a strongly offensive deck. But exchanging the 4 Vampire Hexmage and the 2 Dark Depths for 3 Nighthawks and 3 Shriekmaw (or 2 Shriekmaw and one more swamp) would be an interesting option.
( Choosing between Demigod of Revenge and Malakir Bloodwitch for the 5-mana slot was another very difficult choice. Here again, I chose the more offensive card.

i first thought wtf why does he play Demigod of Revenge in a Vampire Theme deck ? But i was sooo wrong. Was a brilliant decision to include it and had a major impact on your decks performance.
Unlike many decks in this tournament your decks consistancy is definatly one of the things giving you an additional edge.
It is highly consistant and does what it is supposed to do, game after game - definatly a well designed deck.

If a deck wins a game, but you win the other two, in a best of three gauntlet, there is no five point bonus for the deck. If it wins two games (and thus ends the gauntlet) then there is a five point bonus given.Stroggoii wrote:Did a 5 round, best of three gauntlet

Call me a cheater, but when I ran into situations like this, I just debugged myself the winaww1979 wrote: However, the salbei matches also took much longer to play out, and it was annoying when I had Worship out and knew I'd won, only to have to play another dozen turns!![]()

I do that all the time, but in tournament mode, I felt I owed it to people to play it out.

I don't use the debug to win even if everything is going in my favor since there were few times when I thought nothing could stop me from wining the next turn and there goes the AI with Balance or something like that; although I was tempted to use the option when playing Stall and having a complete lockdown but hey, fair's fair

Just a suggestion for future tournaments. I think we should have a separate topic for matchup reviews so it would be easier to find what you're looking for, and for all other comments and suggestions a topic like this where we discuss the tournament and apply for testing, etc.

Blech! IE crapped out, and I lost all my notes and the rapidshare link. Anyway, thedrigo went 10-0. If someone desperately wants to watch the video (it's 4 hr 4 min, ugh!) I'll put it up on rapidshare again, and hopefully not lose the link this time!

Not much variety here in opposing decks
Cole's Notes version:
-Worship won numerous games, it wins MVP
-Ajani made numerous Avatars for the win, and wins Runner Up MVP (except for the game where my Avatar got hit with Chastise... I lost that game!)
-Apparently Qasali Pridemage > Figure of Destiny > Avatar token, because in one game, AI played Control Magic on my Figure instead of my giant Avatar, in another game played Path on a Figure instead of my giant Avatar (but then Chastised it, so that was smart, though maybe unintentional :p) and another game AI pathed my Qasali instead of my 4/4 Figure.
Next up, the discard deck. Go team!
