Vintage Championship Prizes

Postby WD1983 » 09 Aug 2010, 03:48

Since there aren't actual cards made for them, I decided that I would use my graphics skills to create ones for everyone to use with MWS (or whatever else you'd like to use these for.)

I'll post the Time Walk here next year as soon as the art (at a high enough resolution) is spoiled.

Enjoy!

Yes actually... I posted the larger (300dpi) versions at MTG Salvation in the Proxy thread.

The frames are actually compiled from the TEXTURES that are used for the cards. The template file has the FULL background textures in it.

The blue one is good enough, at least I think so... the artifact one looks like it's not, but after reviewing my cards and looking over several examples, the texture for it itself is actually grainy like that on purpose.

texture on the artifacts is not even correct. Compare to any grey card.

It can be found in this template here:

The color is lighter, but the texture itself is correct.

nope it's not, superpose them in photoshop and look at the patterns, they are off quite a bit.
That template was done by another user, and it's definitely not perfect. My guess is he/she used a descreened scan of relatively low resolution.

Being a graphic designer, I know the texture is correct.

The reason it looks off to you is because of the color/contrast difference. Everything matches up when I 'superimpose' the texture over one of the MWS scans. The only thing off is the color and the contrast, which makes it look like it's 'way off' as you put it, but it's really not.

being someone who spent the last 5 years doing this, I can certainly tell you it's not.
I also happen to know my shit.
Let me illustrate it.
The textures are not the originals, they are good cloning brush work (and definitely painstaking work) but they are just not the originals (with one exception - the artifact, which is correct, but it's cropped quite a bit unfortunately.

In the case of the artifact frame, as you can see, the background included fits over if it's sized a little down, it misses the information on the edges - I've stroked and superimposed the background in that template:

For the blue, this is the best image of the background available from card scans. On the right, the background. I think this one is quite obvious. The lower part kinda fits, the rest is pretty much something else.

Convinced ?

I'll try to do better frames, I believe I can in this case. I just want to help and wanted better card images, I don't give a rat's ass about who's right&wrong.

Please WD1983, extreme has right. The textures from MTGSalvation are very bad.
And believe me, I have scanned ten thousand cards, I know like a Magic card looks...
Anyway, these cards we should have in a superb quality, so I think, it is worth the effort.

I see this. The artifact one was the one I was examining. After going over it for like the 5th time, I noticed that it didn't line up EXACTLY because I saw on the bottom where a 'cross' in the pattern was higher on the card than on the pattern.

I was using cards in hand to compare for the blue and didn't look at the left side (which is what's clearly off) and didn't notice it.

I have other templates I can use though, so I figure that might be the best way to go about it, redoing these.

Thanks for pointing these out to me as I make proxies (the ones that we do over at MTGS for the cube.)

extreme: If you can put together better frames, that would be GREAT as that would be a huge resource.
