A trick in Vista is to switch off the 'User Account Control' in the system settings before you run the game. I can only assume Win7 has this same setting.

Already had UAC off due to a conflict with another game.Sonic wrote:A trick in Vista is to switch off the 'User Account Control' in the system settings before you run the game. I can only assume Win7 has this same setting.
edit: Are there any known conflicts? Like w/ ATI cards or MS Security Essentials?

None known, but I'd have some suspicions with MS Security Essentials.llk2k6 wrote:Already had UAC off due to a conflict with another game.Sonic wrote:A trick in Vista is to switch off the 'User Account Control' in the system settings before you run the game. You have to remember this is an old 'heavily patched' 16-bit program, and getting it to run on any new version of Windows is a bit hit and miss to say the least.
Any background program, including virus checkers, which checks the possible legality of any system calls a program makes could throw up any number of problems.
Try adding the offending programs to the exclusion list, if there is one.
Hope that helps

I don't know of any repeatable problems in Windows 7. The only exception might be if there was something introduced with SP1. But again, we've had no problem reports that are consistent.

I have installed the game on my windows xp computer and it does not crash however i see no text anywhere including on the installer. Can anyone give me a fix for this?
*Edit* I update my drivers and the text now shows. It is really slow and as soon as i enter the game it crashes with this error
Assertion Error
File-> d:\newmagic\multiplayer\sid\glue.c, Line->864
Could Not Load Daves Extra Cool Timer
Please Call MPS Customer Support 1-510-522-1167
**I have no idea what this error means or why it shows up. The game is installed in C:\Program Files\MagicTG
I followed instructions by downloading the custom installer through torrents and mounting the image on a virtual drive. I also updated the cardartnew file like the instructions said.

One trick that's know to work for the missing text, is to disable the 'Visual Themes'Elgatozorro wrote:I have installed the game on my windows xp computer and it does not crash however i see no text anywhere including on the installer. Can anyone give me a fix for this?
Create a shortcut for the program causing the problem - setup.exe, Magic.exe, Shandalar.exe.
Right click on the shortcut, go to 'Properties' at the bottom of the menu, and then in the 'Compatibility' tab, tick the 'Disable visual themes' box.
You just have to launch the programs from their shortcuts after that.
Hope that helps.

I was running Windows 7 64-bit home and had this same problem. Everything works fine except the launcher and shandalar. And luckily I found the fix just yesterday.llk2k6 wrote:Hello, I'm using Windows 7 64-bit installing to the default directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\MagicTG) and I can't launch the launcher or Shandalar yet everything else works fine. Anyone else run into this problem and if so how do I fix it?
The trick is, to include MTGlauncher.exe and Shandalar.exe as exceptions to Window 7's Data Execution Prevention(DEP).
Note: You must have administrator access to do this
Go to My computer > Right click it and click Properties
At the left part of your window click > remote setttings
Click the Advanced Tab
Under Performance > Click Settings (the uppermost most button)
Now Click the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) tab
Select
o Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
click add, and browse your MagicTG Folder(Game installation folder) and select MTGlauncher.exe
click add again then select Shandalar.exe
I tested this myself and shandalar should now work fine on your Windows 7 system

Having an issue with connectivity for multiplayer and followed the instructions to the letter.
What we get everytime we try to connect to the host is;
"E009:Sorry, but I can't create a DirectPlay session on that service provider."
This still happens even when using hamachi and changing the port number of manalink.ini.
Our Manalink version is 2.0

Have you tried installing the Multiplayer Files from the first post in this thread? They can sometimes help.Talonblaze wrote:Having an issue with connectivity for multiplayer and followed the instructions to the letter.

Isn't Manalink 2.0 part of a different package?
