Cannot provide compiled version with new cards.

Postby jpb » 11 Oct 2008, 04:55

I attempted to gather all of the card changes on this forum and compile a version for everyone, but unfortunately source.zip from 09-18 looks like a mess; it has some v2 code mixed in and does not compile, and it's CardFactory is a few versions old. The release on 08-27 is the next one on the google code page and the source.zip is old and does not contain all of the cards from that release either. This means if someone other than forge was to compile a version of MTG Forge with the cards on this forum it would be missing all of the cards added in at least the last 3 releases of MTG Forge. We need the newest version of all files in source.zip or have forge update with new cards and release the updated versions.

jpb, I emailed Forge about your problem. But since he has no internetconnection at home, he will not be able top reply to your message nor my email until after the weekend.

As a non-coder, I am really looking forward to a new beta version as there have been lots of cards added lately that, for now, only those who coded them can use.
I so want to be able to play with those cards too!

MTGForge is gathering momentum. Both players and coders are enjoying the game. V2 is looming on the horison, although, it will be done when it's done and not a moment later! (Or should that be "not a moment sooner?" LOL)

Meanwhile, players and coders are doing their best to make V1 better and better.
So I really hope a new V1 beta can be made, with all the newly added cards.
](*,) = coder at work, according to a coder. It does explain some of the bugs.

Yeah there's things wrong with the source of 9-18... too bad too, since it has some really cool fixes (Bitterblossom, creatures with Flash, new cards...).
I hope forge will release a fixed source of that BETA, or maybe compile a new version with some of the additions we submitted.

I've added a bunch of cards that have triggers during upkeep (Dark Confidant, Reya Dawnbringer, Leaf-Crowned Elder, etc.) , and in the 8-27 version those somehow cause extra card draws (Forge fixed this bug for Bitterblossom in 9-18). I have no idea how to fix this, the code for that could be anywhere #-o

I try to provide the latest sources but I do make mistakes, lol. In a day or two, I'll post a new zip file with all of the sources and I'll test it to make sure it works, which will hopefully make everybody happy :) :)

I know the average user can't use the cards that people create, which I'm sure is frustrating. I'm glad people actually want to dig around in MTG Forge and write some cards, it is hard work.

I think there should be an mtgforge channel on irc where people can get together and discuss card implementations - maybe on efnet (so that the official mtgrules channel is a /join away)?

forge - do you use irc at all?

I'm an antifan of IRC...that is to say I loath IRC. Particularly Efnet. I will abstain from any such chat. these forums suffice for our needs I think.

Gando - why the loathing? Do you also dislike instant messaging?

I cut my internet baby teeth on IRC... even ran an um, "image" sharing bot over night on 28.8 dial up.... But I haven't used IRC or installed mIRC in like 8 years.... The last time I used ICQ, it was still just ICQ, not rebranded AIM. Bulletin boards are just fine. There are so few of us that it's terribly unlikely we'd ever be on at the same time. I'm a moderator on a telecom board and we have a third-party applet that loads on the private sections of the forum called ShoutBox, I think it's free. It provides an IRC sort of experience with anyone who is browsing the same board.

Yeah I used to be an IRC maven myself though never an op. I have a strong dislike for IRC and it comes from years of experience with it. I do not automatically object to instant messaging but I do not use the messengers much. I yahoo with a browser (winterwolffh). More rarely I use aim through gmail. This saves me the trouble of having an extra client open.

You obv. never idle'd in one of my channels on #efnet ;)
Fun chats, but when the serious talk needs to be done, I slap on a +m and give out voices by pm (I have a script that only gives +v to a single user at the time, after they are done, they can pass +v to the next in line)
Anyway, if your anti-irc attitude (wich is kinda silly, cause it's just like a forum, only real time) comes from people constantly going off topic, this thread is probably not your best argument for forums use :P

No my anti-irc attitude which is not the least bit silly has nothing to do with going offtopic which is a natural occurance in any intelligent conversation, and a lot more to do with people going idle and being generally rude.

I was a "Wackizen" for quite awhile when I was writing mtg articles (having even met some other Wackizens in person and what not :)) but found that outside that channel few magic channels were worthwhile. +m and +v were often misused by ops on irc channels when I was using it regularly,

I also have gripes about how #efnet is set up on a technical end. Forums are not exactly a great alternative but they suffice for my purposes...(I am usually fairly selective about which ones I am active in.) And if someone is rude at least they wont go on for 3 pages being idiotic for an audience, usually. Also on a forum thread you are less likely to type the very first thing that pops into your head which in my case is typically a stream of profanity directed at people being rude/obnoxious or just odious.

Personally I do not enjoy the irc experience. And thats not even getting into the risks of irc which require a concerted effort to setup against. (At least for me they did.)

I posted a minor update of MTG Forge. The Java source code is included. I tested the source code by unzipping it in an empty directory. I compiled and ran the program with no problems.

The source code requires Java 1.4 to compile. You can get Java 1.4 from here and you want to find the "J2SDK/J2RE - 1.4" on the left hand side and then press the go button. Then you want to download the J2SDK because it includes the compiler. For more info about compiling see "readme-compile.html"

Download MTG Forge

p.s.
I haven't use the effnet is years. I'm more of a forum or e-mail kind of guy. I don't think I've ever "chatted" about programming before.
