Try installing to c:\ instead of program files?

The only thing I can think of now is to check your Virus Checker/Firewall isn't the culprit.
I had a recent problem with another program I've used for years suddenly generating reports of containing a Trojan whenever it was run. This started happening just after my virus checker was updated.
I've got the checker setup to ask whether a program is safe or not when it finds anything suspicious - and as I knew the program was safe I just added it to the 'exclusions' list.
If your virus checker is setup to work invisibly in the background it could be shutting down Shandalar without telling you it's done so. The checker should generate a report if it shuts down any suspicious program - so it may be worth checking if this is what's happening.

Forgot to ask - under 'user accounts' you are running the game from a 'computer administrator' account rather than a basic 'user' account - this can also help on many 16-bit games.
I suppose a last chance solution would be to disable any unnecessary background programs the computer is running one by one, and see if you can identify if any of those are causing the problem.
Anyway - sorry we couldn't solve the problem if you don't mange to get it up and running.
If you do figure it out, don't forget to pop back and tell us how you manged it.
Believe me, you're not the only one whose had problems getting the old girl to run. So any info on solutions to problems on individual setups is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I just torrented the ISO and my antivirus identifies autorun.exe as malware. I could override this, but I'd like to have someone confirm that the file currently being torrented is still clean. I'm excited to start playing this old game, but I don't want to blunder into a virus.
Edit to add: My operating system is Windows Vista, the antivirus is AVG.

Try uploading autorun.exe to something like http://www.virustotal.com/.
I guarantee the ISO has no malware if it's ours.

Hi Sonic,Sonic wrote:I'll look into the Fishliver Oil / Merfolk Assassin combination.chaz2k wrote:Hi,
I'm very impressed with the wonderful work you've done in keeping this great program alive. I installed it along with the magictg_2009_to_2011_patch patch. However, I did find a few cards that are not working correctly:
Merfolk Assasin :
1. Cast Fish Liver Oil on to a creature to give it Islandwalk.
2. Was unable to use the Merfolk Assasin's (no summoning sickness) ability to: Destroy target creature with Islandwalk.
Mox Diamond:
1. When attempting to cast this artifact, one is not given the chance to sacrifice a land to complete it's summoning, thereby it is placed in the player's graveyard.
I think you might be reading Mox Diamond wrong:
When Mox Diamond comes into play, choose and discard a land or sacrifice Mox Diamond.
: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
You have to 'discard' a land card from your hand - not 'sacrifice' one in play.
If you attempt to cast Mox Diamond without having a land card in hand to discard, Mox Diamond will automatically go to the graveyard.
Thank you very much for clearing things up with the Mox Diamond.

I went on to check the Merfolk Assassin card in the later development versions of the game, and it appears the card has been recoded to get it to work using the later added C++ mods.
Unfortunately, this means as all the cards in the ISO were coded in ASM we have no way to fix it at present. Sorry.
Thanks for looking into this, I am saddening by this news, as the Merfolk deck with the Merfolk Assasin is truly one of my favorite decks. If there is a fix in the future, please do let me know.
Warm regards,
chaz

First of all, BIG THANKS!
I remember the pains of installing and patching the game on my old Windows 2000 machine some 9-10 years ago.
Got this awesome ISO to run from the start on Vista. Amazing! I used to play the game a long time ago, and it was so great, and without all the money sucking away as MTGO.
I see that most issues were solved, however:
-In stats/map screens some buttons on top row have their text covered by a black rectangle (not big deal).
-Sometimes, after exiting shop screen back to village screen, the screen goes all black, and I have to click somewhere so it would be redrawn. (not big deal)
-Sometimes it crashes while playing newer cards. (annoying)
-Deck editor edition filter sometimes shows cards never printed in that edition (i.e. some multicolors in Antiquities and such). (odd)
+You fixed the bug where I could tap and mana burn opponent's lands during his upkeep. No more easy cheating! Hee-hee-hee!
Also, am I correct in assuming that I need 2 copies of install for both modern multiplayer and Shandalar, in separate dirs?
1. For multiplayer - Manalink 2.0 + updates + art. (just unzipping works, without any install executable)
2. For shandalar - this 2009 ISO + 2011 update. (install programs)
Also, I am a programmer myself (boring accounting apps), and I myself spent some time fiddling with game files and ended up with nothing. How you guys manage to do it without sources - I have no idea. Big respect!
I am off to play! Wish me luck in kicking Arzakon's ass!

Mostly SQL for queries on server-side and VIsual FoxPro for client-side. Haven't written anything like XOR AX, AX or an INT 21h in years...
