Did anybody understand what suppress_fizzle really does?

For those who didn't follow the topic on sadlyblue's custom DLC, we had a problem with Nomad Mythmaker: the aura was targetted right, but targetting the creature always resulted in a pointer to nil. The problem has been solved by adding the tag suppress_fizzle="1" to the activated ability.
So, the question is: what does suppress_fizzle="1" really do?
By looking at the core cards, I always thought that it was needed on the cards that could sacrifice themselves during an ability, in order to ensure that the ability works anyway. But Nomad Mythmaker doesn't make sacrifices at all. So why does it need that tag?
