Multiplayer Dueling

Contents

Game installation

  • Install the game following the Installation guide.
  • We highly recommend Mok's Manalink 2.0 version for multiplayer duelling! Newer versions are not stable in multiplayer! You can run different versions in different directories, e.g. one for singleplayer and one for multiplayer.

Add a key to Windows Registry

  • After installation create a new file with your windows-editor and paste this content in it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MicroProse]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MicroProse\Magic: The Gathering]
"manalink"="on"
  • Save the file as Magic.reg and run it. When Windows asks you "Are you sure you want to add contents in Magic.reg to registry" - be sure to answer "Yes".

Check everything is OK

  • Start "Magic.exe". You'll now notice that your "Manalink.exe" is active because there's a jewel-like icon ("gem") in the upper right corner. Now you are ready to play online.

Playing the game over LAN

  • Right-click on the "gem". Click on "Preferences" --> "Options". "Use AutoStart", "Show System Messages" should be enabled; "Use Autoconnect" should be disabled. Click "Apply". Right-click on the "gem" and choose "Exit". Close "Magic.exe".
  • Navigate to your "XY:\...\Magic the Gathering\Program\" directory. Open the "Manalink.ini" with the (windows) editor and you will see something like this:
   [Manalink]
   Server=mok.servebeer.com
   Port=119
   AutoHost=0

"Server"= Type the ip of your host here (e.g. unique ip's for each PC from the ip range 192.168.0.*).

"Port"= choose an empty port here. The default port for Manalink is 27500 (recommended!) so be sure your firewall allows traffic through it.

Set "AutoHost" to "0".

  • Make your changes in your "Manalink.ini". Save and Close "Manalink.ini".
  • Now run your "Magic.exe" again.
  • Right-click on the "gem" and choose "Open". In the "Choose a connection type:"-tab, choose Internet (TCP/IP) and click "Connect". Choose "Host". Now there has to appear a message on the top of the screen "Screen name 'your Player Name' has automatically been created on your local area network." In the Status-window of Manalink there should be your "Player Name" and the "Status" should be "Available". In the "gem" there should be the word "NET" now.
  • "Join" the host by entering its ip. After the two players appear in the status window (perhaps you have to push the "Refresh" button to see the other player).
  • One of you must select the other's name from the list and click the "Invite" button.
  • Now your opponent has to double-click on the invitation in the message window and click "Accept".
  • After the acceptance select a deck. Both players are now registered as opponents.
  • The two players now have to click on "Duel Opponent" in the Magic main menu.
  • Now set the Match Parameters for the duel. Click on "Send Parameters" to submit the parameters to your opponent.
  • "Agree" with the parameters.
  • Now the match should begin.

Playing the game over Internet

  • Modify your Manalink.ini:

"Server"= Type your Hamachi-IP here (next to the power-button in Hamachi).

Same settings for "Port" and "AutoHost" as set before (see Playing the game over LAN).

Finding new players

Players gather on IRC server irc.quakenet.org, channel #manalink. If you don't have an IRC client, you can join through webchat. Just be sure to enter #manalink as a channel name.

(Avoiding and reporting) Bugs

  • Be sure that both players are running the same OS (WindowsXP highly recommended!) and the same Manalink version (Mok's Manalink 2.0 version highly recommended!).
  • Errors and sudden program-exits may happen (first and foremost with newer versions than Mok's)! Please report bugs and your questions and suggestions in this thread!
