:) Well, lack of giftedness can be somewhat overcome by hard work. We don't need Mona Lisa here, a smiley face would work. I could make that. And surely the programmers here could provide the hooks.

The doom guy is a good idea... and didn't iD release Doom to the public domain? So maybe we could get a way with actually using it......

On the same vain, we then should have avatar images for the other players....

In general, there should always be a name displayed for the AI player... but not something made-up like "compy" as someone used in the bug thread.... Even in regular mode, the AI name could be something like "fred" or "bob" or "rusty"....

Im no fancy smancy artist, but I do have an art site as my signature shows. On the other hand I don't normally like doing graphics for free, nor do I think Im good enough to get paid on a professional basis. (Not to mention I would never charge for the use of graphics for an open source program.) See the conundrum?

Anyway simple graphics are not a huge amount of work as long as you don't need it shiny and smooth. I might be persuaded do something.

Talk about a rock and a hard place. ](*,)

Don't worry, there are plenty of free images to be used, no work or persuasion involved. This is a trivial job and we can find a volunteer to do it gladly for free if it's something that mtgrares would like to see. If not here then there are lots of artists at MTG Salvation etc.

Just decide how many different emotions are to be conveyed, four or five is a good start.

I don't know what you're talking about. You're the one with the conundrum who needs to be persuaded, so do what you want. Obviously nobody gets paid here, nor is anyone capable of persuasion, I wish they were. My post was about a solution to my idea. If you don't like the idea then that's fine, but I don't see how you get "choosey" out of anything I said. I choose to work with people who want to work, I have no other choice.

RE: the snit you just pulled. Don't.
I wasn't asking for money nor asking to be "persuaded". I was using a turn of a phrase becuase you were talking about how there are no artists on the site. It seemed an insult. Im sorry if you can not parse my sentences to find some sense. I certainly never said it was a poor idea. Re choices: you can always choose not to.

I, for one, am happy you are contributing something to the project, and certainly didn't mean to step on your toes by offering to help.

Interesting images. Why no smiles?

7 column across, 1st through 4th row looks like a kind of smile...a grimacy smile maybe. Do the images you have in mind need to be this detailed or as you said do you think a less sophisticated smily/frown face thing work? I do have some old square moods I did for LJ many moons ago that I am not using for anything else:

you are more than welcome to use these if they suit.

I'll give you credit for one thing, you have a lot of balls. Now that you've told me what I can choose to do, and what not to do, I will tell you something.

There are at least 21 forums on this site, and I'm responsible for all of them. I was responsible for the MWSData forums. Out of all those, I've only seen you in this one. So when I say there are no artists here I speak with a broad perspective, and I'm looking at contributions here, not what people do elsewhere or what they may have in their signature. If you have contributed art here I missed it and it's my mistake. If it seemed an insult to you I don't think it had to do with what I said, it was certainly not intended or implied. I explicitly said I was speaking about CCGHQ as a whole since I don't have a Forge-centric viewpoint. It's not my job to parse sentences either, I'm not a mind reader.

You don't step on my toes by offering to help when I'm asking for help either, that would be illogical.

There are no smiles I guess because the DOOM guy never smiled.

Do the images you have in mind need to be this detailed or as you said do you think a less sophisticated smily/frown face thing work?
It's up to whoever implements them. I'm just thinking out loud and am not telling anyone what to do. The idea of a face is to increase the user's immersion and interest in the game, so if a less detailed face works to that end so be it. I think anything is better than nothing at this point.

I do have some old square moods I did for LJ many moons ago that I am not using for anything else:

Thank you. Now we'll see if someone feels like coding them in.

I guess I owe you an apology for my quirky sense of humor which I thought was communicated but clearly all that happened was we entangled. I don't think I have particularly big balls (though I do stand up and speak out when I see the need) I just think I know my limits. I mean I do respect what you do here. (and thank you for doing it btw) But I think we are talking at cross purposes when we both really want the same thing.

BUT I want that samething as you pointed out really just for Forge because as you noted I don' t wander the other forums as much. (Not that they aren't worthy of my attention but I would spend all day doing nothing else if I did.) As you can see I am overly verbose and not always the most clear. Plus humor doesn't always translate well even in audible conversation. On forums it is particularly trying when the subtleties are too nuanced or missed. That said I will try and be nicer/more blatantly respectful without cowtowing to you so that you understand we are not intended to be antagonists. At least not in my book.

Re the moods: I did those a really long time ago so Id be up to tweaking them abit if need be. They are a bit flat.

Another thing that would be good to do is to Show the player what cards have been won after any given match. This way one does not need to sort the listing by rarity to see the cards given and it lends an air of excitement to the whole thing. A small popup window should suffice, instead of the popup alert.

He did smile when he got a power up - see the 7th column in that image.

I can imagine quite a few of those images used in the project. Beyond the bloodier face as the health drains, the emotion of the open mouth, smile and grin, could show up whenever a spell or ability is played for or against the player, and during any good or bad combats.
open mouth = "Oh no! You've just resolved wrath of god agaisnt me!"
smile = "Heh heh I've just resolved wrath of god against you!"
grin = "You won this combat, but I'll get you next time..."
and so forth.
The Force will be with you, Always.

Thanks Gando, you're right, we do want the same thing. And humor certainly is tricky on forums (I've made that point before over at Magi-Soft forums in particular). I get in trouble because I don't like using emoticons, but they do help.

I also feel no antagonism...and thank you for not cowtowing. :) If it was necessary I wouldn't deserve this job.

This topic has gone OT, so I'm going to start a new one. I don't like locking topics unless I have to, and there's no good place to split this one, so go to http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=998 to talk about adding avatars to MTG Forge, and stay here or start a new topic to talk about fix requests.

Thanks again!

Mr.Chaos wrote:Not so much a bug as a "feature": The AI cannot handle exalted as an ability when playing exalted creatures.
What do I mean? Compy played a new 3 color exalted deck, I played a new elf deck.
The game itself went fine, no crashes or bugs in sight.
But..... when you play exalted critters, and you use Defense of the Heart to bring 2 Battlegrace Angel into play (great play in itself, no complains there), as Compy did, and repeat that on the next turn (again, great play!) resulting in no less than 4 Battlegrace Angel in play, you would expect that only 1 of the angels attacks you, to deal 12 damage (thanks to exalted critters) and gain 48 life.
WRONG! [-X
Naturally, Compy attacked with 2 of the angels. #-o
See attached screenshot to see the moment it happened.
Again, no bug but a rather disappointing moment as compy went on to lose the game, where it should have won it if it had known how to play with exalted creatures.

In other words: "Doc, we need some brains overhere! On the double!
Seriously, Compy needs to smarten up.
Make it so that when compy has several exalted permanents in play, it will only attack with 1 creature.
Please? (That smiley is the closest thing to "big begging puppy eyes" this forum offers  )
Also, I had to remove another attachment to post this one as I had reached my upload limit. Nasty.
seems like this belongs here.
