Picture jpg batch resizing

Postby Xitax » 15 Apr 2013, 01:47

Do any of you have any good suggestions for a good jpg batch resizer that doesn't sacrifice quality? I've been using http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/releases/view/30247 but I don't like the artifacting I get on downsized pictures although the filesizes are nice and small.

Thanks!

What are the expenses? The last time i had to resize a thoiusand picts, I had to disable history in photoshop to avoid waste of memory.

If you already have Photoshop then there's no other cost. Just set up an action that resizes in 2-3 increments to keep the most detail without needing to perform a sharpen. Don't include the save or close as part of the action. I then use a free script, Picture Processor to handle the batch process (accessed through Photoshop>File>Scripts>Picture Processor). I use the 'Save for Web' option as that seems to save out the images with the best file size/image dimensions ratio for the selected quality. It automatically closes each image as it is processed so there's no memory buildup with eventual program freeze.

Note: The script can actually handle the resize too, but I prefer the incremental scaling. You can apply several different actions to each file in the batch as well if you want, so its a generally great batch processor for photoshop. Notes on the script can be founs here.

Note 2: That all said, I haven't compared the result to IrfanView's batch. I understand they use a Lanczos 3 algorithm which can create slightly better results. Chris did compare them at one stage when I created the first original art for the quest wall and seemed to think the result was more-or-less the same, so use whichever you prefer.

Paint Shop Pro - v8.
Oldie but goodie, and free.

"Smart Resize" works great.

Thank you all! I picked up Irfanview and it works well enough for my tastes.
