Very Confused

Postby VladVoivode » 16 Jan 2014, 00:26

Hi all,

Very new to Forge. I've been playing Manalink but I wanted to try Forge. Please excuse the noob questions?

1. I played a few games, and then, when trying to play another game, there are no cards even though I followed the same steps as before.

2. Is there an easy way to play a simple duel as I can in Manalink by merely selecting a deck for me and one for the AI?

3. I downloaded the 437 decks for use in Forge but I am unsure how to install them.

I've read the WIKI and the How to Play (which is well written but doesn't answer the above questions).

Again, I don't want to be a bother. If these questions can be easily answered, I will be happy and can work out the rest!

Best!!

For #1, can you post a screenshot? There's a known issue where in some cases the battlefield doesn't appear properly.

For #2, you can select a deck for you and one for your opponent using the tabs for each player. That said, we're working on a new game launch screen that should make this easier to do starting in the next release.

For #3, you need to extract or copy those deck files to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Forge\decks\constructed, assuming you're running on Windows. Otherwise, there should be a Forge\decks folder somewhere on your machine.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

A huge thank you for your quick reply. I'll post a screenshot later today of the battlefield with no cards. :)

And I will try points two and three. Overall this looks like a GREAT program. The two or three matches I did play were very cool and the AI isn't too bad.

Best,
Vlad

Hi again Dan,

The program was hanging up on the loading decks screen after I extracted the decks into the directory you specified. So, I uninstalled Forge and reinstalled and it's still hanging on the loading decks screen.

LOL This is one of those instances where you are SO close to something cool but one little hitch puts the kibosh on it all. :)

Best,
Vlad

Attached should be the image with a battlefield and no cards.

Additionally, when I deleted the decks, the program fired right up. So, needless to say I am beyond lost

Click Reset Match Layout under Preferences on the home screen to fix the match screen.

Not sure what's causing the hang upon loading decks off hand. Can you post a screenshot of the folder you copied them into?

Over the years the format used by the deck files have changed. It is possible that using a very old deck file format may cause Forge to crash while loading the deck files.

Deck files can also become corrupted and this too can cause forge to crash while loading deck files.

If Forge is crashing as it is launched and is attempting to load in the deck files then you should delete the deck files from your <userDir>/decks/ directory.

Hi Chris,

The two deck collections I installed were the very first two from 2011. One has 437 decks and the other in excess of 500. As these were the most recent collections of decks, I assumed - perhaps incorrectly - that Forge suppoted them?

I have the main program installed under C:\Forge

Thanks everyone for your patience! This really looks like a great game and I'm dying to lose weeks and months in it. :)

Go to the Forge Decks forum and download a few of the deck collections that are from Gos. Those should work correctly.

Hi Chris,
Thanks a lot!! I'll do so and also a HUGE thank you to everyone here who has responded so quickly to my confusion and for your help!!!

What a great community!!

Perhaps as a way to give back, I noticed a thread asking for new sound for Forge. I am a musician and the equipment I use is all state of art. I can create virtually any sound you can imagine. If there is interest let me know and I think I can create some audio files that will meet what your mind's "ear" is hearing.

Best, and again, thank you!!

Some new sound files would be fantastic. I'm about to start on an Android version that will actually be running on a game engine, and would love some cool sound effects and background music for the game that people would actually want to listen to. Hopefully they'd also translate to the desktop application as well.

Also, from that screenshot of your constructed folder I noticed a .DS_Store file, which isn't a deck. Could that have been the problem? If you deleted that, does it work? (assuming you're still in a state where you'd want to test this, otherwise don't worry about it)

The .DS_Store file is a special hidden file that is created by the Mac OS file system. This file contains info on how to display the files and folders that are located in a Finder window.

Sounds like the Forge code that is reading deck files is not determining that the file is a .dck file and it is getting stuck.

The current sounds files should be considered as a temporary sound and they all should be replaced with better sounds. We would be very grateful for any assistance in this area and we would include your name in the list of contributors. :)

Hi Chris,

Let me know what you need and in what format, i.e, .WAV, .OGG, etc.

Best,
