Attention: New(ish) Users of Forge
by friarsol » 07 Jan 2015, 21:26
Hey folks that are relatively (or brand) new to Forge,
What would you have liked to see in a New Users Guide when first starting Forge? I know I've been here so long that I don't even consider certain controls to potentially be confusing or any other early tips that would have saved some frustrations. I'm trying to write a little narrative piece that potentially will be opened up on first launch for brand new users (and also be launchable from inside Forge somewhere).
Anything that made you say "Ohhhh I didn't realize you could do that". I'm sure some of this stuff will have some overlap with the frequently asked questions, but it's just as likely to be something that long term users mention offhand to someone in the feature request thread in response to a feature request.
p.s. Feel free to answer if you've been around Forge for a while too.

Over the last several years I have moved the info found in the Release Notes section of the changes.txt file over to the readme.txt file. Feel free to grab as much of this as you want.

I would be happy to help write and/or edit the User's Guide. I have a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Education.friarsol wrote:Hey folks that are relatively (or brand) new to Forge,

Maybe sticky this thread?
Is it an idea to do a user poll/survey to collect some information about how people play Forge?
That will give some player profiles/play scenario's you want to cover and the FAQs that go along with that.
e.g.
- Forge as a collection manager
- Forge as a deck tester
- Quest, quest, quest
- Commander & other variants
- Forge as a tool to (better) learn magic

Please be sure when doing this to reference both desktop and mobile versions, since the UI is slightly different between the two.

I'm a relatively new user to Forge!
First off, somewhere in there, maybe put an updated current bug list. That way we know what not to do and don't get frustrated and quit when things go wrong.
Second, maybe give a tutorial with screenshots on how to do the main things in forge? You know, good things with the deck creator, how to start a quest, etc. Most people won't need this but some people might.
More to come as I think of them!
Edit: OH~ Something I still do on occasion is hit the ESC key on turn 1 and accidentally miss my entire turn without even playing a land. I know it's my fault for not paying attention but I also know my friends do this too on occasion. Maybe mention that somewhere in there?
