Re: How to beat the first challenge mode *spoiler warning*

IMO some of you guys went too "high-tech" for this challenge. Mono-white Kithkin with 4x Swords to Plowshares and 4x Path to Exile is fine for this matchup. You also want to play Honor of the Pure, Ajani Goldmane, and Spectral Procession. You can choose to play Baneslayer Angel if you like although she's not necessary.

Yes the deck is simple (kill their lords and clock them) and it works well for this challenge. Try it! :D

Death's Shadow ?

I don't remember all the challenges, I try to list them in the next post. But I agree, Wishes with access to 2000+ cards are very powerful but, above all, are very funny and interesting to use.

The tactic was basically try to get complete control of the game through Moat + permission, and then, obiously, Wish for a way to meet the challenge and find an appropriate win.
I won most matches through Akroma beatdown, once with Nicol Bolas, one with Psychatog, one by decking through a recurred Ancestral Recall (priceless moment!) and once through the good old Channel+Fireball.

Lands in play (Easy):
I simply tried to stay behind.. with a Mox Pearl I was able to avoid death and as soon as the challenge was met I gained control. It took some tries, but it's the first match, so it's affordable. Alternative approach is to Ring for Zuran Orb and Crucible of Worlds, using the first to kill own lands, and the other to recover and/or to recur Strip Mine to reduce opponent ones.

Creature Power/Thoughness (Easy):
Living Wished for a 5/5, Donate it, and then used some 1/1 of some kind. Interestingly, opponent had more than one creature but the challenge was met anyway.

Cards in hand (Easy):
Psychatog to control cards in my hand, Mind Twist to control the opponent's.

Cards in graveyard (Easy):
Psychatog to control my graveyard, Tormod's Crypt to control the opponent's (then just wait for 5 cards).

Hit Points (Average):
I got lucky and the matchup was against Turbo-Fog. Channel + Fireball + Regrowth + Fireball did the trick.

Cards in library (Hard):
Jace the Mind Sculptor and very careful planning. Killed opponent with a recurred Ancestral Recall (priceless). I had Psychatog around to help reduce my hand, I think.

Creatures in play(Easy):
Just had to control the number of opponents' creatures... no particular tactic, once opponent is locked with Moat it's easy.

Artifacts in play(Hard):
I was lucky the opponent played a couple of Moxes. I gave him the rest recurring Donate.. very hard however.

Exiled cards(Average):
The opponent didn't try to exile any cards. I played and recurred Swords to Plowshares as much as I could, then Cunning Wish for the last Swords to Plowshares I needed. The hard part is not to accidentally exile any cards (through wishes, Yawg will, etc.).

Turns (Hard):
Meditate, Meditate, Meditate and.. Meditate. Tried something with Time Vault and Mind Over Matter but failed, due to how Time Vault is implemented.

Some interesting Living Wish targets (used either here or in the Master Warlock challenge):

Eternal Witness 1GG [Regrowth]
Ob Nixilis, the Fallen [Beatdown/Burn]
Ertai, Wizard Adept [Counterspell]
Baneslayer Angel [Life gain]
Akroma [Pro-red, beatdown]
Novablast Wurm [Wrath of God 3WWGG]
Oversoul of Dusk [Pro RBU]
Quasali Pridemage [Disenchant]
Rubinia Soulsinger [Control Magic]
Simic Sky Swallower [5GU, Flying Trample Shroud 6/6]
SpiritMonger [3UG, Regen, Vampire, Colorchange, 6/6]
Terra Stomper [3GGG, Can't be countered, 8/8 Trampler]
Platinum Angel
Gorilla Shaman [R, hoses low-costing artifact decks, Turbo-Fog, etc.]
Magus of the Moat, Magus of the Tabernacle, etc.
Nicol Bolas - wins, hands down.
Tabernacle of Pendrell Vale
Strip Mine
Maze of Ith

Edited to add the Turns challenge I forgot.

Donate? DONATE? Hehe, before donate was coded, we had to give the AI 10 strip mines with power struggle. POWER STRUGGLE. And we had to wish for ten strip mines! (when it was 10:1)

It's been awhile since I did this one, but I think mine went something like:

Land = stay behind or used Zuran Orb, which I think I maindecked.

Creature Power/Toughness = Wished for random 1/1 dude, and then stuff like Might of Oaks or Giant Growth for AIs creatures, or if it was a creatureless deck, Pandora's Box and Leviathan.

Cards in Hand = Easy enough to get yourself down to 1 card just by playing stuff, AI was usually Timetwister and Ancestral Recall him to get him to 10

Cards in graveyard = Timetwister, followed by Glimpse the Unthinkable or Traumatize, wished for.

Hit Points = This one was actually easier at 10:1, the wish targets were Magister Sphinx and Hatred :) You could do it the same way, just it takes an extra round, since you have to attack once to put AI at 5, then wish for Hatred and make the kill the turn after.

Cards in Library = Traumatize, Glimpse the Unthinkable, and Prosperity wished for and used to manipulate library size

Creatures in play = Wished for some random creature, a Magus of the Moat or Platinum Angel, or something that is really hard to kill, and then either wait for AI to play 10 creatures or wish for Forbidden Orchard and help him out.

Exiled Cards = Wished for Jester's Cap, then recurred it a couple times, being, as you said, very very careful not to wish again until the condition was met :p (I lost to that a lot because I wasn't careful)

Artifacts in play = Wished for Ashnod's Transmogrant for AI creatures, getting Forbidden Orchard if he didn't have any.

My kill condition was usually decking the AI, or wish for Broodstar, since I had so many artifacts, he was usually UU for some ridiculously badass flyer.

Wow. 10:1 seems to be even harder! Specially without Donate!
I should try it. You are right with the power of Donate, if I would change something in the deck, is to try to maindeck Donate in some way.

Hè hè welldone, You saw right !! it's effectively Death's Shadow !
Yeah, with 2000+ cards, it's very strategic and take a lot of time to find a possible solution or best choice. Multicolor deck is king with wishs.
I just never schearch for type 1 card if I just play legacy. I don't cheat with that ! :D

love this challenge as well. only problem I have is that it crashes the game so often seeing as the games usually take quite long.

1st Challenge " Chipping Away"

Postby Zede » 01 Apr 2010, 20:35

Current version, Oath deck.

.457 2 Mox Diamond
.165 1 Mox Emerald
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.249 1 Time Walk
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.1308 4 Platinum Angel
.1291 2 Iridescent Angel
.17 1 Black Lotus
.230 1 Sol Ring
.499 1 Brainstorm
.212 4 Savannah
.1893 4 Forbidden Orchard
.252 4 Tropical Island
.254 4 Tundra
.1975 4 Propaganda
.1198 1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath
.120 1 Iona, Shield of Emeria
.349 4 Enlightened Tutor
.806 4 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
.333 1 Vampiric Tutor
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.331 1 Imperial Seal
.166 1 Mox Jet
.167 1 Mox Pearl
.653 1 Darksteel Colossus
.12 1 Bayou
.1876 1 Reflecting Pool
.1205 2 Seaside Citadel
.312 1 Ponder

Best i can do on chipping away is the 10th oponent, when you start on 2 life. If they win the toss and go first, a turn one swords to ploughshares or similar is all that can save you. With the randomness of who you play - you might just get the burn deck on the 10th & a tricky lightning bolt on round one & your dead..

Anyone managed to beat this level ? post ideas/decks plze.. :)

The card is unlocked during the upkeep of game 11.
Make sure you are setting up your gauntlet for at least 15 games.
Retired a long time ago. I will not reply.

I posted one I did on here:

viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2194&p=28052&hilit=chipping+away#p28052

It was a lifegain deck, and where I'd been doing the challenges without the silly cards like Oath.

Somewhere there are threads for each of the challenges and the decks people made to beat them. I couldn't remember what the original thread was called, though, but it probably has 'challenge # whatever' in the title.

The first time I beat this challenge, I'm pretty sure it was with monowhite, and lots of lifegain like Kitchen Finks, Knight of Meadowgrain, Soul Warden, and that sort of stuff.

I succeeded with the white weenie lifegain. That deck is a house! Takes down my good type 1 decks at times.

I had a quick go with that deck before - got to 5th oponent, but ended up being the mirror match...after the 35th turn & 30 mins later I had to go out alas, bad bad deck for the mirror - impossible to kill ! Will try again..
